Guest guest
Debra, The reason I first got a cell phone was for that reason. I had a long commute and there were places that were too desolate or bad neighborhoods. I also had quite a drive for my kids soccer because they played for a club in another town. I'd be on the road driving when they would decide to cancel practice and I never knew. With the cell I'd get the call en route and saved myself going all the way to the practice and then all the way home. You get the idea. I also got my son his first cell phone when he started driving because he drove 30 minutes through the boonies to school. In a car he'd rebuilt himself so I wasn't convinced it was reliable. OT... flat tire Last night driving home from work at 1030 I had a blow out on one of my tires. I don't have a cell phone. (I am one of the few Americans that don't.. LOL). I was lucky that I did not have a wreck and pulled over quickly to the shoulder. It was dark and drizzling rain. I had just gotten into an area that was kind of populated. (Part of my drive is in the boonies where there is nothing). I sat there with my hazard flashers on for about 5 minutes thinking someone would stop. No one did. I then saw a house across the 5 lane highway. The house had a light on in the living room and the tv on. I ran across the highway and knocked. A very nice elderly gentlemen answered the door and let me use his phone to call my husband. Ok... I sat for a few minutes and here he came with the kids. He got out of the truck to change the flat. He left his headlights on the see better. Uh Oh, the truck was not running at the time. Now the flat got fixed and he had a dead battery. LOL. (not so funny at the time). Ok, went back to the old gentleman's door and he answers again. The nice man goes and gets his " jump box " and drive across the road with it. It was dead and had no charge. Now he goes back across the highway to his house and finds his jumper cables. He came back and we got the truck started. How much can happen in one night???? I need to get a cell phone. What if I had been in the middle of no where and no one stopped or the wrong person stopped???? Guest guest
I'm glad you are okay! You can get those pay-as-you-go cell phones so you don't have the outrageous fees. Hubby and I pay a lot for ours but we can talk to eachother free anytime. I think they are almost a necessity these days, mostly just for peace of mind. debra van ness wrote: > Last night driving home from work at 1030 I had a blow out on one of my tires. Guest guest
Debra, The two best things I can think of to remedy that situation is to 1) get a cell phone and 2) learn to change the flat tire so you don't have to wait on anyone or have the wrong person stop. I personally think it is VERY important for every woman to know how to change a flat tire so that she is never stranded or god forbid, at the mercy of a crazy person who stops to help her. That was part of the requirement for my daughter getting her driver's license. She had to know how to change a tire, check her oil and power steering fluid, check her radiator level and to always keep a gallon of antifreeze/water in her trunk, a flashlight, a can of fix a flat and a gasoline container. I am glad that you got everything fixed. Luckily to stopped in front of the house of a very nice person. lisa n.
Guest guest
Oh girl get a pre paid cell. I can't change a tire because the bolts are riveted on but I sure know how to ring for road service and I have a lovely pillow in the back seat for that kind of situation. You were so lucky thank g-d there are still nice people in the world, you may only run into them once in a while but hell they sure find you when you need them. Guest guest
I don't have the strength to change a spare tire. So we signed up for a rescue service through our cell phones. Guest guest
OMG Debra. That is a big hassle for one night. I have one of those Tracfone's where you can buy the minutes as you need them. But I'm hardly out of the house, so don't use one much. Some cellular plans have really great deals and might turn out to be cheaper than paying for a land line. Anyway, I am thankful that you found a nice old man who let you use the phone and tried to help you out. It's scary these days knocking on a stranger's door.
