Re: rosacea (eye dryness)-plugs

I would love to hear from anyone who has had the plugs done for the tear

ducts. I have developed a horrible reaction to anything and everything I

put in my eyes for lubrication (including the preservative free drops and

the ointment with only the petrolatum and mineral oil). My eyes feel like

sandpaper so I assume plugging the ducts is my only alternative. I had even

discontinued the borage oil and flax oil thinking perhaps this altered my

body chemistry so much I could no longer tolerate putting anything at all

in. I am so disgusted that I can't put a darn thing in to relieve this. So

PLEASE - anyone who knows anything about this, I would love some feedback! I

literally wake up feeling like my lids are stuck to my eyes!!! HELP!!!

Thanks in advance,

Patty

Would you please explain to me what plugs are and what exactly they do? I

have never heard of this procedure and I am sure there are others that havent

either.

Thanks

Patty,

I developed dry-eye syndrome long before I had rosacea. I live in the

desert, where super-dry and hot summers tend to dry you out, AND I

have allergies galore.

In 1995, I was summering in San Diego, which has some great eye

doctors at the Scripps Institute. I had plugs put in at Scripps

(in-office; I drove away aftrer an hour), and it's helped me a great

deal. At the time, the doc said that if the plugs ever fell out (they

can, if you rub your eyes too much, but so far mine are still in),

and

if I felt this plugging was helpful, then I might consider just

having

the ducts sewn up, which many people do.

In any case, getting the plugs is considered a " forgiving procedure, "

that is, it is reversible and highly unlikely to do you any harm.

My eye dryness still gets bad in summer, but I find that TheraTears

is

the best of the non-prescription eyedrops. It's a bit pricey, but

what

wouldn't you pay to get relief??? Ask for it at WalMart, Walgreens,

K-mart, etc. If they don't have it, they can order.

Best,

Plugs are small collagen " plugs " that are inserted into the corner of one's eyes

to " stop " the tears from draining. Therefore more tears stay in the eye and

alleve some of the dry eye syndrome. They are indicated when someone has dry

eyes and/or does not produce enough tears.

I hate to be a bother but do plugs hurt when they are put in your eye? Are

they uncomfortable also to have in your eye? How long do they last? Is the

procedure done in the dr. office or hospital? Thanks again,

Bobbye
