Guest guest
Hi all, Just wanted to drop a note to introduce myself. My name is Skramstad. I JUST moved (This weekend past) from Portsmouth, Rhode Island to Brockton, Mass. I'm 29 years old, 6' 4 " tall and have no idea how much I weigh. I guess the doctors estimate 500-550 pounds...Who knows. Hehe. I'm currently on disability with severe sleep apnea, bad back, shortness of breath and slightly high blood pressure...And that's just for starters. I actually have never had a constant doctor. I usually just visit the emergency room when I'm sick with something... I've been looking into weight loss surgery the last month or so. I was really skeptical about it before I knew anything about it. One night I was watching the Stern radio show on tv and saw the lead singer from the band Blues Traveller on. He was/is a big boy...400+ pounds...but he had lost 170 pounds in 7 months after having gastric bypass surgery. I was floored...Later that night, I was flipping through the channels and saw a 2 hour show on weight loss on the Learning Channel and they had a good portion on weight loss surgery, how it was done, etc. I took both of those as kind of a sign I guess that I should look a little deeper into it. Searching on the internet, I found TONS of pages of success stories of people with changed lives. It actually hit me harder than I thought it would. I climbed into bed that night with my new wife (Who I met online incidently...Love the internet ) and talked to her about her feelings of me looking into the surgery. said she would be scared if I got it (for obvious reasons) but would definitely support my decision because if I don't do something that I will be dead one way or another from my weight problems. That was about a month ago. I've been on the net everynight reading info on the surgery and stories of people that have gotten the surgery. I'm still pretty young and strong for someone my size so I think now is the time to look into it. I have medicare currently and will be put on my wife's insurance the beginning of January (Tufts). At the beginning of January when I am put on Tufts I will have to choose a Primary Care Physician but I'm worried that who I choose will be one of those doctors that doesn't approve of weight loss surgery. I really REALLY hate when I see a doctor and they say silly things like " You just need to excercise and eat less " Grrrr...Like if that was so easy there wouldn't be such a huge problem with obesity in this country. Anyways...I have already made an appointment to see Dr. Thayer in Newton on February 1st, but before that I have to choose a PCP, make an appointment to discuss my history and get to know the doctor and ask them for a referral that needs to be sent to Dr. Thayer. Anyone in the Brockton Area with Tufts that can suggest a PCP that is good and believes in weight loss surgery? Hehe...I dunno, maybe I'm just stressing out because I have alot to do before February 1st. Hopefully everything will just fall into place, which will reinforce my view that fate is pushing me in this direction. So...Umm...Hi --
Guest guest
Hi WElcome aboard! Glad you found us all. An alternative, should you not find a PCP by asking here, is to call Dr. Thayers office & explain your predicament & ask THEM to recommend a PCP from the Brockton area who has in the past recommended THEM from. That works! It's wonderful, absolutely wonderful, that you have unconditional love from your wife. I am also glad that she is able to put away her fears & support you in this. Many of us will tell you it is the very best thing we have ever ever done in our lives. Again, warm welcome. Read a lot here, and ask any questions you wish. Guest guest
Hi , Its good to hear you are exploring WLS. I had mine done in August and I'm lighter by 70 pounds. I just wanted to say that medicaid(ie;Mass Health) pays for this procedure as well as for the panilectomy after weight loss. So you should not have trouble with insurance. It is wonderful that you have a supportive wife. Good luck. Guest guest
Hi , I had the same surgeon as did Popper <sp>. Dr. Gagner is out of NYC and performs 3 WLS surgery types, all laproscopically. He is a briliant man who helped develop this manner of minimumly invasive surgery. He offers his patient the Band, RNY (what Mr. Popper had) and the BPD/DS. I chose the BPD/DS. You can research Dr. Gagner at www.surgicallyslim.com and my surgery type at www.duodenalswitch.com if you wish too. I wish you great fortune in your research. Marc bigethdog@... Guest guest
THanks for the advice, Norma. I think I'll probably do that. I also need to call Tufts when I get on it to make sure I'll be covered immediately. I spoke with my mom who said that sometimes you have to be enrolled in an insurance policy for 30 or 60 days before you can actually be covered. Huh? If that's true, it's pretty silly. Oh well...I'm in a good mood after reading all these emails so I am not gonna be all worried and stressed out today -- Re: New member...Yay me? , You have chosen a great Doc. many on the list have him. Like Lori said call the Dr. office up for a hint to whomever would be a good Dr. for a PCP. Then there is Lori referral to her own Dr. who referred her to DR.Thayer. You've already have done a great deal of exploring your options. I have DR Randall he is wonderful also. NORMA IN MASS 267/175/119 RNY12/9/99 DR,s Brig. Woman's Hernia-2 TT DR. I just moved from Portsmouth, RI...I lived on the same Island that Newport was on. I honestly believe that I was the heaviest person on the island...And people would definitely remember when they met me. I like to think it was because of my charming personality but I'd venture to guess it was my size It's great to hear you're doing so well. Hopefully I'll meet you when I start going to the meetings. Guest guest
Welcome to the list ! Glad you chose to join in, to learn some more, hear personal stories, both pro's and con's. I don't live in the Brocton area, so I'm unclear of which PCP to chose, but I agree w/Kim...call Dr.T's ofc and ask them of a good Dr. in your area that they have dealt with. I was 28 y.o. when I chose to have my surgery, I'm also tall (for a woman) - 5'9.5 " , and when weighed in at my highest, weighed 433 lbs. I haven't been on the scale in a couple weeks, but I'm approx 240ish now (I think)...give or take a couple pounds. I have regained such a HUGE confidence level since surgery, feel so much better, get less winded when walking, bending, shit, even sitting! The clothing is a big thing for me..I like having to try on a " style " rather than a size now, just can't seem to get the " trend " I'm looking for...I've aged a bit since surgery (now 30), so I can't wear the things I would have when younger ya know? I wish you all the luck in your researching, and feel free to ask away! Welcome again! Dawn (The newlywed!) New member...Yay me? So...Umm...Hi --
Guest guest
Wow , sounds like you've really given this a lot of thought over the past month. Welcome to the group, and good luck in your search for the " right " doctor! -Kathy
Guest guest
: First of all, welcome to our group and to Brockton. I am also a Brocktonian. It's nice to have someone else in the group (Jeanie Place is also a member of the group from Brockton.) Wish I could help you. I had my surgery with Dr. Thayer in May of 2000 and my PCP was just wonderful. Unfortunately, she gave up her practice this month and I am now looking for a new PCP also. It's probably a good ideal to have the surgery before any major complications set in - and, of course they will sooner or later. Keepy us posted and good luck. Guest guest
Dawn, In your message to (and I don't mean to butt in), but you referred to aging to 30 since your surgery. You make it sound as if you were 90 years old. You are young, attractive, just married, have everything going for you. You made it sound OLDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD. Now I am OLDDDDDDDDD. I am 53, almost 54. I could be your mother, well almost anyway. But, you know what, when I lose the weight I want (I think 110 lbs), I am going to look young. That is not the reason for doing the surgery, but if that is thrown in, I will accept it. Take care, sweetie. You are young at 30. It is all in the perspective. Glad you are back with us. Missed you, but I bet you did not miss us one bit. Sally P.S. Was my message about my visit to Dr. Thayer this week before you came back? I had gained 11 lbs. since August. He says stop eating, " you don't need lunches " , remarks about Christmas goodies. So, I am sitting here like a good little girl (see, I am already thinking young) with my water bottle. As a preopper, I will take you on some day this week for a water day. I am practicing sipping, not gulping. Not easy.
