The itchy areas don't " look " like anything - if you can refrain from

scratching them. If scratched enough the skin will break and start a

cycle of bloody sores and scabs which are scratched off as the

itching becomes unbearable.

The itch feels like a deep seated prickly sensation that should just

go away with a quick scratch if it was a normal itch like most

people experience. Only it doesn't. It seems to spread and

intensify. Since itch and pain sensations share the same neural

pathways, sometimes increasing the level of stimulation to a painful

level will relieve the itching by masking it with pain. I have at

times gotten relief from itchy hands by washing in painfully hot

water (followed by cold water rinse to take away the burning

sensation).

The best thing to do is ignore the itching, but that is next to

impossible to do, especially if you are not actively engaged in some

engrosing task.

Dear Clint,

Possibly,

My son has also had lots of strange skin eruptions, most of what we

attributed to allergies and hives. Especially if they itched.

I personally think that there is a lot allergy overlap with my son so

it is hard to decide what is causing what.

Can anyone tell me how the itching manifests itself in PSC? What it

looks like. Is it constant or does it come and go.

Before I found out I had PSC, I had what everyone thought was hives.

I've had them fairly constant for 3 years. Lately they have come and

gone. Could this have been related to PSC all along?

Thanks

clint

Clint,

Noah’s itching

started on the hands and feet. It was so bad that he would rub his palms on

the corner of the curbs to scratch it.

No visible sores.

It varies for me... often the itching does start in my hands and feet,

but it can occur just about anywhere, and when it gets really bad it

also tends to spread to more of my body.

My fiance's itching basically is in her feet but does occur in her

hands and her lower legs at times. What we have found is if she keeps

a good intake of water daily and avoids coffees, teas, etc. The

syptoms are alot less.

HI Clint - my itching is mainly on my lower arms and legs - rarely on

hands and feet. There is no rash or marks on the skin. The intesity

of the itching comes and goes, sometimes bearable, other times

[thankfully not so often] unbearable. I find that wearing cotton

clothes close to the skin helps and I now take Rifampicin once a day

which helps a bit. Ask your Doctor for some medication as they have

many 'lines of defense' against itching, Questran usually being the

first.
