YEAH, You go girl, thats wonderful. Do you think the dreadmill is the biggest thing? Or are you on a weight watcher thing?I am soooo proud of your tiny self. Something is up with Yahoo. I didn't get several e-mails yesterday. This happens time to time. Yes I am so happy for Gwynne, In her picture she looks like pure delight personified. I do hope she just flys through the healing process. My prayers are with her and Joyce today. Did Joyce post about the time she was to be at the Hosp? I am so scared for her.  Love and Prayers, PeggyIPF  2004,  Florida"Worry looks around, Sorry looks back,  Faith looks up." May,

I know!! I'm pretty excited. It's a good start. I realize I won't keep up that pace forever but it's good motivation to keep going.

Just take it one day at a time, it's not easy but we can do it!

Oh, Beth!! I am so excited for you!! I am trying to get back on track, too, since the weather is warmer now and I can get out. I have walked 1 mile per day for the last 2 days, bought myself a pedometer and have managed to get in 10,000 plus steps the last 2 days (mainly because the grandsons stayed overnight and they ran my legs off!! LOL!!!). I am trying to eat healthier, too. I have a doc appointment on Wednesday with my pulmo's wife who is Internal Medicine to establish care. According to my scales, I have lost 5 pounds since starting the prednisone and Imuran the first of the month. Guess we will see what their scales show!! I don't want to gain the weight back, but thank goodness, the nausea and stomach cramps have subsided somewhat. Hope it will stay that way. I wish you all the best of luck with your weight loss goal. How much do you plan to lose if I may ask? I would love to drop at

least 10 to 20 pounds. I am 4'11" and weigh normally between 128 and 135, currently 131. When you are vertically challenged (as my oldest son calls me), every pound looks like 20!! LOL!! Caro... I'm glad to hear the nausea/cramps are better!

Gee, 4'11". You are short on one end. I used to be 5'91/2 and am now 5/8. I liked being tall.

Holds the weight better! lol.

I say I'm not overweight I'm just too short!

Take care.

Hey guys, Thanks for the help. Someone on here said that when one goes to pulmonary rehab, the fibrosis patients are different from, say emphasemia, because one is different from the other because.... The exercise will vary. Can anyone remember what the difference between the two? LInda k Central Ilry Beth wrote: Thanks for the long distance congrats !! It feels good

Well, my experience was that the rehab I went to didn't distinguish

between diseases or those just needing rehab from surgery or something.

Unfortunately, he'll probably be the only PF patient and its a bit

depressing to realize you have the worst disease there and annoying to

hear the others complaining. Some of the educational topics can be as

well. Now, the knowledge of PF will vary with each rehab facility as

will the makeup of the session. However, they will tailor to your

abilities. He'll probably be shocked to find out he can do more than he

realizes and more than most there.

Yes, the diseases are different but breathing exercises are breathing

exercises and treadmills or bicycles or rowers or any other exercise can

help either. Similarly the stretching exercises and small weights are

the same.

But, I have never heard anyone say it wasn't of benefit to them. Just

don't expect him to be surrounded by PF'ers or even classmates who know

what PF is.

Now others may have had much different rehab groups from mine.

K.... when I go to rehab at the hospital there are only two types of rehab....Cardio and Respiratory. Everyone in there is doing one or the other. PF is not so common.

But anyone in rehab (unless one is doing maintenance on their own) has an assigned RT who works practically right beside a person. The RT does whatever Drs orders request.

I hope Don can get into rehab.

Tell him hello for me today!

Hi from one of the other s

I did pulmonary rehab for about 2 months. We had a RRT & a CRT

assigned to the rather small class. They hooked us up to heart

monitors so they could watch our readings. They stuck their own

portable O2 tanks on us and checked our sats after each exercise.

After 2 months I had reached 4 miles on the stationary bike in 20

minutes, a mile on the treadmill in 20 minutes. They used to have

graduation ceremonies for the heart patients. They get better. Lung

patients not so much.

I quit rehab when I had a flareup of my disease in December. One day

I was fine, just peddling away doing 4 miles and the next day I

didn't feel so great. The CRT said my lungs sounded clear. But I

knew something was wrong. The next day I really knew something was

wrong so I went in to see the pulmo. Sure enough he admitted me. I

was heading straight for pneumonia again. That was an epiphany for

me - you mean it can do this AGAIN and REPEATEDLY? Boy that sucks.

Up until that point I pretty much believed I had gotten sick, my

lungs had been damaged and that was it. No more. Wrong. My

diffusion capacity had increased only slightly with rehab but I did

enjoy the exercise and the people I met there. It was the first time

I had really been around people with similar disease. I was having

to go from work at 10:45, miss lunch and I'm diabetic, get all sweaty

and go back to work for the day. I work in a professional office so

that was not cool.

For some of us it works, for some not so much. It does help if even

slightly with the friendships formed there. He will learn he is not

alone.

S,

I'm so sorry you had to quit rehab because you got sick. You're correct of course that we don't really "get better". That's not what rehab is for. Rehab is to strenthen us and help us learn to live our best lives within the framework of what our bodies can now do. It sounds like you accomplished alot in your two months as far as increasing your ability to exercise. What is interesting to contemplate is how much more ill you might have become if you had not been in such good physical condition when you got pneumonia.

Once our lungs are damaged there isn't anything we can do to reverse it. (At least not currently) What we can do and what rehab helps us to do is get the rest of our bodies as healthy as possible so that we live and long and as well as we can.

My diffusion didn't improve at all either but I didn't expect it to. Rehab isn't going to remove the scarring from my lungs. What it does do is allow the rest of my body to utilize the O2 my lungs can provide as efficiently as possible and helps us feel better, physically, mentally and emotionally.
