Gratitude and Giving

The impulse to give arises from the soul within, whereas the desire to take arises from our personality when we feel lacking in some way. Generosity is a soul quality, just as selfishness is a condition of the personality. One of the ways to increase our generosity and thereby increase our soul-personality integration is to give. But how do we do that when we feel we have nothing to give, or feel that we are lacking?

Gratitude is a soul-inspired personality attitude which we can cultivate, and in doing so increase our desire to give. Gratitude is an attitude which we can create and maintain. The more grateful we are for so many things in our life the more we want to share ourselves, our time, our energies and the things we have.

Giving that results from feeling grateful, and not done out of a sense of duty or with expectations, makes us very happy and often filled with joy.

Giving helps eradicate fears – especially fears of inadequacy, of lack and of meaninglessness. Giving improves our health and outlook while it brings us into connection with others.

Research shows that five minutes of feeling gratitude or appreciation will calm the nervous system. Stressful emotions such as anger, frustration, resentment and anxiety create erratic heart rhythms. States of appreciation help to create a state called resonance in which the heart, breathing, blood pressure and brain rhythms are synchronized, resulting in a state of well-being. Appreciation and gratitude are, in effect, states of love which cause our heart rhythms to be coherent and ordered, calming our neurological and endocrine systems.

A study was conducted with 30 individuals who focused on gratitude and appreciation for 15 minutes every day for one month. This practice resulted in an immediate and significant increase in levels of an immune antibody called secretory IgA which is one of the body’s primary defences against invading bacteria, viruses, parasites and fungi. At the end of the month all 30 participants had a 100 percent increase in the beneficial hormone DHEA and a 30 percent reduction in the stress hormone cortisol.

It seems that one of the easiest and most effective practices we can undertake is to spend a few minutes each day, or several times a day, to feel or express appreciation and gratitude. It is powerful and transformative.

Gratitude creates a pathway for the soul and enables us to give generously. Giving is an expression of love that comes from a grateful heart.

Exercises:

1. Spend at least 5 minutes a day focusing on gratitude.

2. Imagine and feel yourself giving to others along with practical plans of doing so.

3. Keep a Gratitude Journal in which you record your appreciations each day or frequently. © Reproductions Permitted http://www.thesouljourney.com
