Ive heard a lot of good things on here about PhotoDerm but has anyone heard

anything about possible damage to your skin? I havent heard anything but

today when I told someone I had the PhotoDerm done they commented that I

should be careful that it doesnt damage my skin. The word " laser " does

sound rather intimidating. There isnt any risk to skin damage from this is

there? I have really sensitive pink skin.

The risk of scarring is really, really minimal with

this procedure, according to the clinic I'm going to

and the research I've done on the 'net. Photoderm is

not actually a laser per se, but it is similar. It

uses the full spectrum of visible light, not the more

damaging UV wavelengths or other spectrums that are

not visible. That's how the procedure was explained to

me. It does less damage to the epidermis than other

true laser treatments b/c the pulses of light are

highly specific--they can bind to the blood vessels

and only the vessels w/out damaging the surrounding

tissues. Plus, the settings can be adjusted so that it

penetrates deeply rather than irritating the surface of

the skin. Of course, the treatment is still in its

infancy, so long-term problems really can't be

completely ruled out until its been in use for a

while. So far, though, in the hands of a skilled

provider, it doesn't look like there is any permanent

damage to the skin.

Hey ,

Well put! I wanted to respond to this also, but I didn't

have the energy at the time to explain it!

I have heard and seen great results from lasers so it

almost makes me want to try them too (which knowing me I will at some point).

I know that there is a higher risk of scarring with some of the lasers,

especially in the nose area, and from what I have seen with having Photoderm

done myself there isn't that risk. Of course in the wrong hands any cosmetic

procedure can be risky. It is like you said, you just have to find the most

experienced doctor that knows what they are doing with these machines.

Lately alot of derms are jumping into the cosmetic end of

the business since it is so lucrative, so you really have to ask alot of

questions to make sure that they are well trained and just didn't take a one

day course and start practicing on patients.
