Using Minocycline

I began using 100 mg of Minocycline once a day two weeks ago. I take it at

lunch

with food but noticed that my stomach has bothered me the past two days within

30-60 minutes of taking the minocycline. Members on this board have suggested

taking Bifidophilus an hour before a meal to build up the natural flora in the

intestine and to help prevent yeast infections both of which seem to occur with

antibiotic use. I have a supplement from Nature's Sunshine Products which

suggests taking 2 capsules per day. Amount per 2 capsules is : lactobacillus

acidophilus 5 billion and bifidobacterium longum 2 billion. Does this sound

like

an adequate dose?

Does anyone have other suggestions which have helped them tolerate antiobiotics?

Thanks for the help,

a

I've been using mino on and off for the last 8-9

months. I'm currently doing one day on, one day off,

hoping to wean myself off completely once my

photoderms are completed. I guess I've been using it

long enough that I can take it on an empty stomach and

it doesn't bother me, but that wasn't the case when I

started. I would take it right after eating, making

sure to drink plenty of water with it (a full glass,

if possible). You could also switch to taking it after

dinner, or about 30-60mins before bedtime, so that if

you get nauseated, hopefully you'll sleep thru it. As

for the probiotic, I actually take two capsules twice

daily, about 30mins before breakfast and dinner. I try

to wait 1-2 hrs between the probiotic and the

antibiotic. I don't think it matters much what brand

of probiotic you take, just get a mix of

bacteria--acidophilus and bifidus are the most

important. I also try and get non-dairy versions

(sometimes, the bifidus is bovine-derived).

If your stomach upset continues, talk to your doc or

pharmacist (the latter would probably have better

suggestions) about other tricks you can try to

alleviate the discomfort.

a,

I always take pills with a full glass (at least 12 oz) of water unless the

instructions say otherwise. Then I drink another 12 oz somewhat more slowly.

Pills tend to sit heavily on my stomach also, but I find that drinking a lot

of water definitely helps. An additional strategy is to take a Cimetidine

(tagamet) about one-half hour before the main pill/s, and chase the

Cimetidine with a glass of water. Then when I take the main pill, I chase it

with another glass of water.

You might want to check with your doc if you decide to go the Cimetidine

route, just to ensure that Cimetidine causes no problems with the other

medication/s.
