For me they just replaced the valve and put it in a different place.I did have the whole thing taken out when I had a shunt infection, but that was the only time. Guest guest
Colleen..I assume you mean VP/A shunts, as opposed to on in a syrinx?? TTBOMK what is done in the revision depends solely in what is the problem with the shunt. ( Hmmmmmmmm..seems to make sense <g>) They do not always replace the whole thing. In my case, in 11 years I have had 2 revisions... The first time, the actual valve in the shunt malfunctioned and they replaced that. The second time, the tubing in the distal (lower) part sort of " blew apart " ( supposedly pretty rare <g> lucky me) and this time just the lower " tubing " was replaced. There is also the situation where there are shunt blockages which actually " right themselves " ! FYI,,,there is also a list pretty much like this ones, just for hydro. Shunt issues are discussed frequently.. All best wishes, Sally R...ACM..Decompression '91..Hydro .. VP shunt.... 2 revisions...NO medications... doing well in Bethlehem,Pa shunt revisions > Hi, > > I need to ask those of you who have had shunt revisions, did the surgeons go in and unplug the shunt in some way or did they replace it with a different one? > > When my shunt plugged last year the surgeon went in and totaly replaced it with a different kind of shunt. > > After being sick for the past cuple of weeks ? virus, flu I am having some of the familiar symptoms I had when my last shunt plugged. Guest guest
It does depend on what's wrong with it or where it's blocked. (now 19) has had several shunt revisions since his first shunt at 7 weeks for acquired hydrocephaly - he has a VP shunt and once they replaced the whole thing, another time they just replaced the tubing from the external valve on the side of his head, to the peritoneum. (On this occasion, they grew some bugs in the fluid that was left in the tubing, so he had to go back for more tests to check they weren't still there. All was clear, but 3 weeks later they diagnosed Chiari. Margaret ( can't reply as he's in hospital as we speak waiting for his decompression tomorrow) colleenkrause wrote: > Hi, > > I need to ask those of you who have had shunt revisions, did the surgeons go in and unplug the shunt in some way or did they replace it with a different one? > > When my shunt plugged last year the surgeon went in and totaly replaced it with a different kind of shunt. > > After being sick for the past cuple of weeks ? virus, flu I am having some of the familiar symptoms I had when my last shunt plugged.
