Guest guest
The biggest thing I took away from the book & miniseries is what a miracle that this nation ever survived much less thrived. The " Founding Fathers " did not get along. Hamilton was a conniving jerk who manipulated the party system, Jefferson was a dandy who could not handle money who these days would be guilty of statutory rape, Washington married mostly for money and possibly started the French & Indian war, Ben lin was a womanizer deluxe and they all put their individual states interests first. Not unlike now. There never was a scene like portrayed in the painting we've all seen of the Declaration being signed by all the delegates. It was only signed for 4 people on the 4th and took nearly a year and 1/2 to get everybody's name on the paper. The Washington bio " His Excellency " supports all this and is also a good read. It is almost a crime that only 3 & Martha letters survived. She considered them personal and burned them all. The letters however were epic and maintained by their survivors. Not at all the history I recall being taught in school. I think we'd have been much more interested had we been told more about their personal lives instead of just their accomplishments and when they did what that we had to learn for some test.
