I know what it means when even the sheets on your bed hurt. And some talk about the aura around you. I was so inflamed that I could feel if someone was within a foot of me. Handling the " infection " first were words of gold to me. Again, many thanks. I placed a call for an appointment with Dr Whitman in NJ and had to leave a message. It will be a drive as I am in Virginia. It seems that you are no longer seeing him. Who are you seeing now, and are you on the Marshall protocol? I am questioning new avenues since I developed an allergy to minocycline which worked wonders for me. Now if I take it in half dose (50 mg), I get big purple splotches on my legs. Guest guest
Taking large doses of vitamin C while using Minocin may prevent the discoloration. It occurs most often in people taking the larger doses of the antibiotics. Ethel From the FAQ - 5. WHAT IS HYPERPIGMENTATION? Minocycline can cause discoloration of the skin anywhere on the body. This is called hyperpigmentation. Large daily doses of ascorbic acid (vitamin C) may prevent this phenomenon. (Bowles WH, Baylor College of Dentistry, Texas A & M University System Protection against minocycline pigment formation by ascorbic acid, J Esthet Dent, 10(4):182-6 1998) Dr. A. Franco, a rheumatologist practicing in Riverside, California, says that hyperpigmentation occurs in about 10% to 20% of patients taking minocycline (Minocin) on a daily basis and over one year. Occasionally it may appear earlier. It occurs less frequently with patients taking Minocin on a three times per week basis. It may be necessary to switch to another antibiotic. It is usually reversible after discontinuation of the medication, but fades slowly and sometimes not completely. Dr. Pnina Langevitz in Israel has done three double-blind studies on the use of minocycline in rheumatoid arthritis with some patients on the medication over 5 years. The following is from Langevitz et al - Minocycline in Rheumatoid Arthritis; Isr. J. Med Sci 1996;32:327-330. 'We also observed skin hyperpigmentation in about one third of our patients as a late complication of the therapy. Minocycline related hyperpigmentation of the skin is a well known complication of this agent and can be subdivided into three categories. The first is characterized by dark black-blue macules localized at sites of cutaneous inflammation. . . . . . . . . . . The second type is a more diffuse hyperpigmentation, predominantly on the lower extremeties and on areas exposed to sunlight. . . . . . . . The third form of minocycline-induced hyperpigmentation is the 'muddy skin syndrome' Ð a dark brown-gray discoloration of the skin generalized over the body, less prominent in non exposed areas. The high incidence of skin hyperpigmentation in our group of patients is probably due to the longer follow-up period than that in other groups, and to sun exposure.' (Patients in this study were on 100 mg. of minocycline twice s called hyperpigmentation - rheumatic AP doctors on east coast & marshall protocol > > > > Hi Dolores, > > Thank you for your very encouraging words at a time when I really needed > them. Guest guest
Hello . I went to see Dr. Trentham first right after my NYU docs said I was terminal with Scleroderma. After I was on Mino--A/P for about 18 months through year # 2,, I switched to Dr. Whitman in N. J. because of Debbies recommendation and has his office in N.J. That was much closer than going to Boston which was every 6 months and then only once a year. By that time, I was seeing great  improvement and then suddenly I hit a plateau where I was not continuing to advance. So, I researched the Marshall Protocol and asked Dr. Whitman if he could monitor me. He said he would, but when it came to taking the 40mg of Benicar, he balked. ( I wanted to start with 20mg and Dr. W, said even that is too much.) He confierred with my cardioloist and they agreed that I should only take 5 mg. But then when I wrote to the Marshall Protocol, they said that at 5 mg, I would not be considered as being a patient on the MP. So, I found another doctor in NY who would.  I went on the MP without a hitch and started with the 20 mg to build up what they call the Benicar Blockade. I had no problems with that. I followed the Marshall protocol all the way thru to the very last phase and went into remission several months later. Total time on both protocols was 5 yrs. Still on Minocin. at half dose, three days a week for precaution and doing well. No longer on Benicar. I now live in the caribbean and have not found a doctor who even cares about Scleroderma. At least not yet, but am still searching. I really don't need a doc right now as my PC will give me scripts for Minocin, but would like to know if there is one out there that I can count on should I ever get sick again. In a pinch, I would fly back to Boston and start all over agin with Dr. Trentham You do know that Minocin is not the only tetracycline based antibiotic. There are others like doxy, clindyamycin, Bactrim, Azithromycin, etc. I used them all while on the Marshall alone or in cominations of three. I believe that between the Minocin and all the other antibiotics I took that I did a great clean-out of the micoplasmas that were destroying my body. I take the preventative dose as my protection so that I never get infected again, totally my own idea. I also thin that the Benicar was a big boost in getting me into remission. it all helped. The dark spots on your legs may be from hyperpigmentation... I had that for a while but my skin lightened up again. It is reversable. You do right to check it out to be sure it is not an allergy. Thank goodness we grow new skin all the time. My best to you, Dolores  .  From: Painter <shelleypainter@...> Subject: rheumatic AP doctors on east coast & marshall protocol rheumatic Date: Tuesday, September 7, 2010, 9:41 AM  Hi Dolores, Thank you for your very encouraging words at a time when I really needed them. Guest guest
Hi this is Dolores again who can't stay out of a good discussion. I had hyperpigmentation in 2007. I was into my second year on AP when I came to Puerto Rico for a couple of months to scout around for a home. Was planning on making the move and needed to see if I liked it enough to uproot myself. I had the muddy brown/gray color at that time. My doc was not concerned. He said once I lower the dose of the Minocin, that the condition would reverse itself. I too. had purple splotches on my legs like someone had beaten me. I was also taking Insulin injections at the time, so my thighs were all purple. About that time, I went on MP and eventually all the marks disappeared. I now live in the caribbean and have a natural normal looking tan. I am of mediterrainian descent, so I tan easily. Most times I go out when the sun is not so high in the sky and use an umbrella to hide from the sun when walking in it. That's it. No long speedh this time. Dolores & Mike From: mannasal@... <mannasal@...> Subject: Re: rheumatic AP doctors on east coast & marshall protocol rheumatic Date: Tuesday, September 7, 2010, 2:17 PM  I feel Dr. Sinnott in Iowa would be a good one to talk to about the discolorations sometimes when using minocin. Guest guest
HI Ethel, thanks for the link...I knew about the microwave popcorn issue because we have a plant here in town...( I never worked near there) but several employees were dx with OB...they were on the lung transplant list because of the severe OB...I read about them in our paper and immediately contacted the atty for them...gave him the info re OB and photopheresis and never heard back ...so I don't know if they went after photo or not...apparently, they all worked in a flavoring plant...ughhhhh.....I worked in a vet hospital with tons of animals...and was exposed to a large parrot for years ....with the dx of the OB we had to find Bishop a home, no birds for me...because of the lung issue...my thoughts still are...was the OB caused by our parrot, the mino or my RA? Dr. W erred on the side of caution in taking me off the mino...ugh...but I am doing ok...want to add on some more detox measures tho...Thanks Ethel for the link...appreciate it....Emotional baggage, yikes...need to work on that as well...thanks Ethel...you are the best!! Debbie rheumatic AP doctors on east coast & marshall protocol Hi Dolores, Thank you for your very encouraging words at a time when I really needed them. Guest guest
Hi all, Most of us with S/D that post on this site are on Minocin, so it is hard to tell which came first. And whether. the splotches, and skin discoloration come from either S/D or the use of Minocin. Most likely both. The thing to do is to shield yourself from the direct sun, stay hydrated and use creams to help eliminate that leathery look on the legs. All my symptoms like that went away. My skin is soft & supple now. It takes a long time. But eventually, the soft skin does come back. Take care, Dolores From: Elllen McCool <ellenmccool@...> Subject: RE: rheumatic AP doctors on east coast & marshall protocol rheumatic Date: Wednesday, September 8, 2010, 11:17 PM  So, Debbie, you don't have the Raynaud's? Guest guest
Yes, I do have Raynauds....and it gets really bad with cold...I think what the one poster was referring to was purple splotches on her skin...more of the minocin skin discoloration from taking mino...I got it as well on mino and it all faded away when I went off. rheumatic AP doctors on east coast & marshall protocol Hi Dolores, Thank you for your very encouraging words at a time when I really needed them.
