Guest guest
A nasal swab? Hmmm....I was tested years ago, when first sick...and it was blood, lab tests...My local lab pulled them and sent them to a special lab...I think Ethel knows this lab...I am sorry I cannot remember the name of it...but they do the PCR testing....Ethel....can you post the lab...I remember there was a woman there that worked with Dr. Brown or did testing for him...something... But my test was definitely a blood draw not a swab...have things improved that much that they are now able to do swabs? Debbie in Cincinnati rheumatic Question about myco testing Has anyone had mycoplasma testing done? What specifically did you have done and where did you have it done? I asked my DO to give me a script for mycoplasma testing, which he did. I went to the Immediate Care place I usually have bloodwork drawn, and they had no clue what to do and suggested I go to a hospital. So yesterday I did. After a lot of calling around, they were able to figure out what to do.....a nasal swab. If I'd known they were doing a nasal swab, I wouldn't have taken benadryl yesterday!!! The order looked like it asked for a mycoplasma pneumon PCR test. I don't think that's what I wanted. I was hoping for, at minimum, a broader test for mycoplasma, but was really wanting more specific testing of m. fermentans, etc. So, I'm wondering how to go about getting the specific tests? What do I ask a script for? And where can I have it done? --Celia <><
Guest guest
Debbie, my allergist ordered a mycoplasma test on me and my grandson and it was definitly a blood test. I went to Labcorp and he went to Quest (just different insurances) both of them come back possitive.. Guest guest
Debbie, in answer to your question, Dr. Millicent Coker-Vann was the director of Dr. Brown's Arthritis Institute at the time of his death. Later she established her own lab - Arthritis Research Center 504 E. Diamond Ave. Gaithersburg, MD 20877 Phone: 301-216-1231 Hospital laboratories or local labs like Lab Corp, Quest, etc. can only test for mycoplasma pneumoniae - thus testing for all other forms of mycoplasma that affect these diseases must be done at a special lab. Guest guest
Thanks Ethel...I knew you would know....have you ever heard of just swab testing for myco? Guest guest
hi Celia, I went to Dr. Trentham and had my myco test done by a blood draw, not a nasal swab. I don't think the place you went to knows what you wanted or maybe the doc didn't write down the correct test. Mine came back positive for Mycoplasma Pneumonae and it was definitely a blood draw. I think they measured the antibodies. Dr.Franco in Riverside, California does all that teating. Maybe you can ask your doc to call him and get the details from Dr. Franco. Dolores & Mike. Guest guest
The sample required depends on whether testing is done to determine the presence of antibody or to detect the microorganism itself and on the health status of the patient. Antibody testing requires a blood sample, obtained by inserting a needle into a vein in the arm. Direct detection of mycoplasma may be done on a variety of samples. For a respiratory infection, samples may include sputum, a washing of the bronchi in the lungs, or throat swab. If a systemic infection is being diagnosed, blood, joint fluid, body fluids, or tissues samples may be cultured. Some samples may require a special procedure to collect them. Personally I had bloods drawn, but having said that we expected I would come back positive for mycoplasma it was just a confirmation thing. > > > > From: DEBBIE GIBSON <Debbullwinkle@... <Debbullwinkle%40fuse.net>> > > Subject: Re: rheumatic Question about myco testing > > rheumatic <rheumatic%40> > > Date: Wednesday, June 9, 2010, 8:05 AM > > > > > > > > A nasal swab? Guest guest
Dear Group, Two hours after receiving the email below, I saw Dr. Franco in Riverside. To test for mycoplasma, Dr. Franco sends a blood sample to a lab, which then tests for Immunoglobulin G (IgG), antibody molecules which reflects a past infection, and for Immunoglobulin M (IgM), antibody molecules which reflect a current infection. My mycoplasma tests were done by Quest Diagnostics, Inc., which has locations in most US states. I believe that mycoplasma testing is done by the Nichols Institute, which is now part of Quest. Lots of other tests were also done. According to Dr. Franco, commercial labs only test for one mycoplasma type, namely Mycoplasma Pneumonae -- and there are 13 other mycoplasma types for which there is no affordable commercial test. So it is very likely that an arthritis sufferer has a mycoplasma infection and no test results to prove it. To treat a mycoplasma infection, Dr. Franco prescribes antibiotics (Minocin, Doxycycline, Zithromax, possibly others) plus a probiotic and lots of food supplements designed to boost the immune system. Purchasing all of the prescribed food supplements from Dr. Franco's company, the Arthrits Center of Riverside, would cost close to $400 (US) per month. I have purchased most of these supplements because I am desperate; however, I will try to find other sources for next month. I have now seen Dr. Franco twice, and am very impressed with him. Never before has a doctor done such a thorough evaluation and taken so much time to explain things. Dr. Franco also has a sense of humor. He grew up in Peru, but speaks with French accent because his parents are French. Guest guest
Thank you Harald for that detailed description of how Dr. Franco does the myno testing. It cleared up a lot of my thoughts and I now have a better picture of what goes re: myco testing. Dolores & Mike > >hi Celia, I went to Dr. Trentham and had my myco test done by a >blood draw, not a nasal swab. Guest guest
the arthritis research centre that ethel mentioned http://www.tarci.net/ tests for 4 differnt strands of mycoplasma. i tested psitive for two. they do ELISA tests and a PCR test. on the road back website there is a chart listing different kind of abx used to treat the different strands of mycoplasma. the ARC is much cheaper for testing than franco. and you can get the test kit sent to you anywhere and then go to a local lab with a blood draw request from your doc and pay a small fee -$20 for me - to get your blood drawn. then it's about $100 for each test. i had two done. monique
