Rick, weaning off prednisone can be very tricky and it can result in causing

the patient to worsen, so if you have no experience in this weaning process,

then I strong suggest you need to follow a physician's orders. Once a

patient gets down to say 10 mg, it can take forever to get off of it so do

be careful. It seems the longer a patient is on prednisone, the harder it

can be to get off of it - but it can be done.

I remember one scleroderma patient that had been on prednisone for about 20

years in doses from 60 mg to 120 mg. At one point she had solu-medrol by

injection. It was about 18 years ago when this happened and I've forgotten

the exact amount, but I think it was 2000 mg. I remember I was stunned when

the nurse told me the dosage. Her bones were extremely brittle and the

doctor said she would never get off the steroids. It was a day of great

celebration when it happened.
