Guest guest
Whether the government used a feeding program or not, prion encephelopathy diseases are not exclusive to animals fed animal by-products. Scrapie is a very old disease that greatly pre-dates the modern practice of feeding animal parts to ruminants. It's my bet that Chronic Wasting Disease also predates such things, but simply not noticed or not diagnosed as such until these diseases became an issue with the outbreaks of BSE and Creutzfeld. With that said, I must admit that I've become reluctant to eat elk. I figure that I have better choices available, and I'm better safe than sorry. I'm also just a paranoid coward. :-) -----Original Message----- From: Carmen [mailto:ctn@...] Sent: Tuesday, March 19, 2002 12:03 PM Subject: BSE in US Yup, that's right. Ask anyone that raises goats or sheep. It's called " Scrapie " in goats and sheep. The government has implemented a " Scrapie Eradication Program " for everyone that raises these animals. Scrapie has been in the US for number of years in these particular ruminants. For reasons I don't quite understand, the case that got so much publicity in Vermont is not an isolated incident. I think the government was just trying to make a statement, " See we are being so careful to protect everyone. " Also hunters are quite aware of wild game such as the elk herds in Colorado mentioned below that are infected. There are government regulations now in place that prohibits wild game being shipped across state lines for this reason. My understanding is that the government tried to increase the herd sizes of some wild game by supplementing their diet using commercial livestock feed...........
