Guest guest
Food sensitivities are all individual. That is why so many recommend the elimination diet so you can test YOUR body to see what YOU react to. I don't have problems with nightshades, and like the member below, rely on potatoes for a lot of my starch intake without any repercussions. Sweet potatoes are not in the nightshade family. Yea! A friend of mine, with fibromyalgia, commented on how intense her symptoms had been through the summer and then she felt better later in the fall. Knowing she has a garden, I suggested she might look at tomatoes as a culprit. I don't think she wanted to hear that. It is tough. And it is not fair. But if we want health, we have to be willing to do what it takes. It makes us stronger! And it is worth it to be able to button my own pants, open a door, or turn on the windshield wipers on my car without feeling like 50 needles are being stuck into my knuckles! Or to be able to toss a ball for my dog and not feel like someone slammed a baseball bat into my shoulder. Food as Medicine is a good book. We also have to remember that food can be a culprit as the foods we react to gear up our immune system, contributing to the inflammation and pain. By avoiding the foods that gear up your immune system, you are giving your immune system a break, a rest, so it can do what it is supposed to, and not over react. Guest guest
I am sending you LOTS of love, Delores. I just wish I could send you wellness. Been going through a LOT of stress here also with family health problems etc etc etc and just did oral clindamycin as precaution as I know stress is not our friend at all. And with SD, well, I KNOW your fear. Keep your face to the sun and keep going forward. In a message dated 3/11/2011 3:37:10 P.M. How are things at home. If you want to write to me personally go to my home e:mail site..... I just added it up in my head. My mom passed Oct. 21 and then I ran out of Mino. the kids told me they were coming for Christmas and I ran around the stores a lot getting everything ready. At the same time I was settling my mom's estate and feeling out of sorts about the whole process of death and certainly was worn down taking care of her during her last days. So, everything sort of came crashing down. I loved having the kids, but breathed a sigh of relief when they went. By then I was exhausted and then my fight began with the Insurance & Pharmaceutical company and I had to visit three docs and convince them to write letters for me. Saw 6, but only three wrote, then I had surgery on my eye which I still can't see out of and in the middle of getting some more opinions. Waiting on my cousin to give me the name & number of his opthalmologist and then may fly to NYU Eye Instittute if I need further surgery. So, I'd say that since Sept or Oct. the stress has been mounting on me and no wonder I feel so shitty. But I am a fighter and I'll get back there hopefully by spring or summer and you'll all know about it as I will be my old self again. Take care and hugs all around. Guest guest
You know that stress I was referring to, Delores? Well, Sommer's medical bills continue on and her college expenses do, too. Her insurance has never recognized her illness - depression with MANY hospitalizations and treatment centers so we have weathered this. And, she is graduating in spite of that and going to grad school. And Rob has come home and is attempting to carry himself on into medical school if he can handle it. And Bob is now 3 1/2 years from colon rectal cancer diagnosis and two major surgeries but going strong now. I don't think it will ever be in the cards for us to retire. I am 66. With the financial expenditures, we are left going into old age with our LIVES. And I am so grateful! Just poor. But Rich, if you get my meaning. Goodnight. In a message dated 3/11/2011 4:56:56 P.M. Guest guest
Hi .  First , in spite of all your troubles, congratulations that your children did so well in school and that they have chosen good fields to go into. In that way you are rich. I hope that Bob has conquered the Big C. My mom survived breast cancer in her 80's with surgery followed by radiation and 5 years of taking Tamoxofin. You live in Canada and don't they have a social security program like we do. Also, don't they have free college? I don't know much about Canadian law. They must have something for seniors and disabled people. You may need to see a disability lawyer to get the benefits that should be yours by rights. Mike and I get social security! Certainly not enough to live very well on. Mostly we eke by each month, but we are a very entreprenural couple and are alway working on something. After retirement, Mike and I signed up with actors guild and became extras in movies and did some commercials. Then when I got scleroderma and couldn't handle the job, we put an ad up in craigslist and puppy sat for people who had to go out of town on business or wanted a vacation. I also started up a cottage industry of making jewelry and sold my pieces. Then we signed up for focus groups. At Christmas, Mike was Santa, I was his elf and we got $100/per showing at private parties. Now, I am in the process of applying for a vendors license to sell my jewelry again. Meanwhile we are advertising the RV out back to weekend & vacation guests. We also manage rentals for the owner of the big house facing the ocean on the same property as ours. Mike also trades and sells stuff on e-Bay. There are lots of ways to make money. I am a retired nurse, but I haven't been in a hospital in ages. I'm 74 and still working, but differently. I am in the middle of writing a book We worked the NY Census back in 2000. Bought a mobile home in Fla. which we would rent out for vacation rentals for a few years then sold the home. During that time, we used to go to help a friend run her hostel during the winters in Florida. We had housing. income  & rental and kept our apt. in NY and keep the mobile home rented.  We made money every which way we could.  And come up with different ideas all the time. I love being an entreprenure. I love to paint. Have been offered money for some of my paintings but as yet can't bring myself to sell any of them, but could if I really needed to. Check your talents. For a while, we belonged to a band. Mike plays the guitar & harmonica. I chime in by beating my tambourine and writing songs. I have so many ideas on how to make money. Everybody has talents. Use them in your old age to cover expenses. We are also great shoppers and will not buy anything unless we can get it at rock bottom price or make a trade for it. Mike taught me the trading business. It has worked well for us. Make a list of all the things you can do. You'll surprise yourself. And have fun with it. Dolores    From: Maz <__maz.aust@..._ (mailto:_maz.aust@...) _ (mailto:_maz.aust@..._ (mailto:maz.aust@...) ) > Subject: rheumatic Re: My diet regime __rheumatic _ (mailto:_rheumatic ) _ (mailto:_rheumatic _ (mailto:rheumatic ) ) Date: Friday, March 11, 2011, 5:22 AM Forgot to tell you watch the nightshade vegies This was the beginning for me, give up all of it for about 4-6 wks then one at a time reintroduce things, I did it by introducing one food then waited 2 days to see if there was a reaction then wrote it down on a I can have this, I can't have this list .. then I stopped eating it & tried the next thing .. eventually I had a list of these are ok for me. > Ok everyone I give up ... here it is > > > Here is the list of things that have been suggested to me NOT TO EAT! > And at the bottom the list of things I have to eat..... > > WHEAT PRODUCTS > Gluten Grains - wheat/barley/oates/rye Pasta (wheat based) (Corn & Rice pasta >is OK) > > Additives 1440-1444 (really important) > Gravox, gravy sauces (which are thickened with flour) > Lollies (or sweets or whatever you call them in your neck of the woods) > Malt, beer > Vegemite / marmite > Coffee (unless percolated, and a big no to instant coffee unless it is >percolated granules eg Moccona coffees' are actually percolated first so that >brand is OK) > > > SULPHUR PRODUCTS > Fresh fruit- cherries, grapes, bananas (only organic bananas OK) Oranges (a >definate NO NO) > Garlic & onion (too strong, substitute shallots) > Lentils (specifically dried beans / chick peas) > Deli meats (unless stated as gluten free) > Sausages (bought) Additives 220-225 MILK PRODUCTS Milk (cows) (Soy & Rice OK) > Cheese > Ice cream > Chocolate > Yoghurt (all flavoured ones) (Natural yoghurt OK) > Margarine spreads (Nuttelex brand is OK as it is dairy free) Mayonaise (milk >free is OK) > > > FATTY FOODS & SUGAR > Cane sugar, lollies (do not use artificial sweeteners at all) > Honey Jam (shop bought) (pectin & all fruit jams OK) > Milo > Fruit drinks (bottled/purchased) (juice your own OK) > soft drinks grapes > > Smoke 'rollies' not cigarettes (for the additives) > > In other words AVOID WHEAT, GLUTEN, SULPHUR, MILK PRODUCTS CHEESE, SUGAR, >INSTANT COFFEE, ALCOHOL, CHOCOLATE, ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERS, SALICYLATES > > MUST EAT -- plenty of protein!! > Fish > Red meat > Veal > Chicken (only a little because of growth hormones, here in Oz chicks go from >birth to table in 6 wks) > Vegetables (everything except tomatoes only cooked not raw) > Nuts (no to peanuts or cashews, but can have all others) > Pears > Mango > Can eat rice (basmati no long grain or jasmine) > > I rarely eat processed foods & hate chocolate (yes you read right I just don't >like chocolate, never have) so this food regime was not a stretch for me. Guest guest
Delores, I loved this email. What a full blown talented lovely outgoing person you are! Would love to live near you. No, I am in Billings, Montana in frozen tundra having moved from Texas when my husband moved here. Cold weather is hard for me in a way that he and others cannot understand but I have almost survived another winter. I did not get your sleep last night. My daughter, who is 28, is completely dependent financially on us with her mental illness, depression, psychosis at times, anorexia and bolemia, cutting. She has been ill like this since she turned about 13 or 14. She has been on respirator so many times in icu and in treatment centers in Utah and Texas while Blue Cross Blue Shield continued to deny she was ill inspite of all our medical recotrds and the bills we were left to pay for her. At this minute, she and I have a contract for her to stay alive until she can begin one more drug which might help her. She is tired of fighting it all and I am with her in that I love her enough to want a quality life for her. I sleep on the edge waiting for the phone to ring. Social security begins for me this month. Bob has a couple more years to wait. In the meantime, we are attempting to get Sommer on a SS program which will help financially and get her on medicaid, I think. Lots of stress. In the meantime, Delores, work toward wellness as you have become very important here on this site and eat my part of all that fruit you have. We do not grow anything here. I am unable to plant until June 1 and then can have freeze in September, usually around the 28th but as early as the 9th. Not enough time to grow anything! Love back to you, rheumatic Re: My diet regime __rheumatic _ (mailto:_rheumatic ) _ (mailto:_rheumatic _ (mailto:rheumatic ) ) Date: Friday, March 11, 2011, 5:22 AM Forgot to tell you watch the nightshade vegies This was the beginning for me, give up all of it for about 4-6 wks then one at a time reintroduce things, I did it by introducing one food then waited 2 days to see if there was a reaction then wrote it down on a I can have this, I can't have this list .. then I stopped eating it & tried the next thing .. eventually I had a list of these are ok for me. Guest guest
Potatoes will cripple my knees within a day of eating even a small amount. Goat and sheep cheeses have the same proteins as cows milk cheeses so they are not an option for me. The proteins are hard to digest. Mushrooms are a fungus and supposedly not good for Blood Group A's. If you have to eat them try Shitakes or some of the more beneficial ones. Guest guest
Does this mean you can have dairy products as long as they are natural? It doesnt mention milk or butter either way. Guest guest
So that means tomato sauce is OK? I usually substitute almond milk, but if you can't have any sugar, I would have to make my own which would be a pain in the *ss. Guest guest
Instead of trying to figure every little thing out why don't you just leave everything out that is recommended you shouldn't be eating for 2 or 3 wks (at least 10 days anyway) then you can reintroduce things one at a time, you will figure it out if you do it like that .. but remember if you don't react to something take whatever it is back out & try the next thing. As for your tomato sauce, over here all store bought sauces have sugar & preservatives in them & my AP Dr is adamant that people with our diseases have to watch out for hidden gluten, sugar & especially preservatives .. so I can't have store bought tomato sauce. It's all very individual, but with trial & error you may find the result is that you can eat store bought tomato sauce, but I can't. Nothing about this is hard & fast, it is simply a recommendation of things that may/probably contribute to us feeling unwell & certainly can contribute to inflammation.
