Guest guest
Yeah! Fruit and vegetables grow like weeds here. It is so fertile that sprays are not used. And the growers are ourselves and my neighbors. My cousin's avocado tree is huge and the avocados are as huge as melons. They are wonderful....I can eat them without any problem. She gives them to me by the balefull.  And even though they are pure fat, I lose weight. I can't seem to gain an extra pound any where. I guess my metabolism is fast. That was last yield when I felt good. We shall see now with the new growth. It will take a couple of months for them to mature. Right now it is mango season and we are getting mangoes left & right. The problem is I don't like them, but Mike can't get enough. Take care! Dolores > > > >> I am absolutely convinced that diet is a big part of this path. > >> When I first > >> saw my AP Dr she gave me a fact sheet about all kinds of food > >> stuffs, what not > >> to eat, what I could eat & should be eating. Guest guest
Dolores, as far as I've read about organic vs conventional, IF the fruit or veg is not treated with anything at all, it's considered organic. Anyone? I'd like to know for sure. Judy In a message dated 3/11/2011 11:43:40 A.M. Eastern Standard Time, martysfolks2004@... writes: One quick question on Bananas. Here in PR, they grow on tree in everybodys back yard including mine. No one sprays anything on them and so does that mean they are considered organic. That is all the bananas I eat. We have those little finger bananas and I eat several a day for the potassium. I did the same thing when I lived in Hawaii during the 80's. I ate the bananas off the trees. The same with mangos, papayas, starfruit & avodados. They grow wild. We have about 30 avocados starting on the tree right now. The tree was planted a few years ago and this is going to be the first yield. I will have to check if they are nightshades. Guest guest
Wow! I've been eating organic since I got to PR. and it is free because it grows in the yard. IMangoes are in season now, so tonight I ate some for the first time. Not too bad. I think I can get used to it. Mike cut up a few pieces and cut up a banana. That was dessert.  Are Avocados nightshades. I love those and they are now starting to sprout on the tree. Lettuce grows here too. It is different lettuce, but I like it. They yank it from the ground with the dirt attached. I bring it  in the house, cut off the dirt part and wash off the leaves. It is kind of skinny and not as crispy as the Romaine I used to eat, but makes a good salad or on a tuna or egg salad sandwich I hope that is not a night shade. I like the starfruit too. They call it carambola. We also have a lime and lemon tree that is always full and I make my own lemonade or limeade. But I do use Splenda as I am diabetic. Can't use sugar and don't think I can drink lemon or lime juice without a sweetener. When I lived in NY I could get stevia, but not here. I will make use of the organic garden. Thank you. I am also growing my own spices like oregano. The oregano plant looks like a small tree. I will miss garlic & white onions. The white onions here have a sweet flavor that I like. Now I am really hungry. Take care,  Dolores  From: mannasal@... <mannasal@...> Subject: Re: rheumatic Re: Elimination diet success? rheumatic Date: Friday, March 11, 2011, 8:51 PM  plus the big bonus: you eat these wonderful foods vine ripened as they drop from the vines into your hands....doesn't get any better than that! sally rheumatic Re: Elimination diet success? Guest guest
Not bad with sweet little apple bananas either. Just ate 2 hard boiled eggs with a scoop of tuna and a little mayo. No bread. Now I am eating a sugar free jello. And will wash it down with some herbal tea. Of course, some acidophillus first. wish avocados were in season. I could eat and entire one.  How about cantelope? You never mentioned fruit. I usually mix berries, or strawberry with bananas or pears. I love canned pears. Apples and peahes are difficult to get here and expensive. I buy applesauce in the jar, but when I go to New York, I love to bite into a nice crispy Fuji apple. Take care. Dolores From: mannasal@... Guest guest
In my mind this has to be a Herx reaction. Maybe cut them out one at a time, for 3 weeks each. Gluten and sugar 1st I would say, and keep your dairy to a minimum. At the end of the 9 weeks, if you are feeling better, try adding each one back in, in a big way to see if you find a difference. Wait at least a few days for a delayed reaction. I would probably eat the possible offending food in a decent quantity for one day, then stop again until you see any possible result. You can also try with nightshades and root vegetables. Guest guest
Hi Sue, I eat really good (for many years now) and much is raw. I find my body does not desire/crave sweets, junk etc. However, once in awhile I do have pizza (which is ok with my body). For me, it's when I eat something with sugar (like 1 cookie) and feels stiff(er) and worse the next day. Being sick, or being well....sugar is poisen and addictive. For me, it's like a drug...takes a few days to get out of my body and the craving stops. I love cookies and started getting sugar free cookies....now they seem too sweet. My body does tell me what it wants (or not want) and it's good healthy stuff. Could I get back into my old way of eating crappy stuff.....probably. I know there is a balance to all this eating, but not for me yet. I have added in local made organic raw yogart, and my body loves it! (probiotics?) Most food I crave and love (good stuff) tells me my body is needing a particular nutrient in that food. I'm homebound with RA and have a lovely local healthfood store deliver my food. Mostly veggies. I do enjoy my food....and would love to have nutrious meals prepared for me! As I get better, I'll have more energy to prepare things. When I do have something not good for this body, I enjoy it, then go back to how I like to eat. None of this is easy. Sally Re: rheumatic Re: Elimination diet success? Really? Guest guest
Thanks Sally. I'm glad your healthfood store will deliver. It's so hard with this and not being able to get around or have the energy it takes to make a healthy meal...ugh. I do CRAVE chocolate, I feel like an addict. Not in a " cute " way that people think, I'm totally serious and have a very hard time not eating chocolate on good days, bad days forget it as I feel sometimes it's all I have left to enjoy. I would probably eat the possible offending food in a decent quantity for one day, then stop again until you see any possible result. > > > > You can also try with nightshades and root vegetables. > > > > Kinga > > > > rheumatic Re: Elimination diet success? > > > > >> > > > > >> > > > > >> Carey, > > > > >> > > > > >> I was definitely at the peak of my RA symptoms when I started > > > > >> watching my diet > > > > >> in August 2010. Guest guest
I believe that when you cut out foods that feed the bad bacteria and yeast in your gut you will have die off since they are dying off and shedding toxins as they do. This link explains this further: http://vimeo.com/10507542 This is another explanation: http://www.frot.co.nz/dietnet/reviews/mcferran07_elimination.htm By Friday evening (day 1) you should start feeling your first 'withdrawal' symptoms. You won't be getting the temporary lift provided by your allergenic food(s). Withdrawal symptoms can take many forms. The most obvious is an increase in joint swelling and pain. Headache, muscle aches, fatigue and other flu-like symptoms are very common. Strong hunger pangs and cravings are usually present. It's not unusual to still feel hungry shortly after a meal. Withdrawal symptoms will worsen on Saturday and Sunday (days 2 and 3). The intensity of these symptoms should not be underestimated. In fact many will feel completely crippled during these days. Withdrawal symptoms can be somewhat ameliorated by taking one tablet of alka-seltzer (in the gold box) in a large glass of water. This can be repeated every 4 hours if needed. You should try to drink plenty of water. It will help speed elimination and the 'clearing' of symptoms. By Monday (day 4) some will feel significantly better as their withdrawal symptoms begin to clear. This 'clearing' will continue on Tuesday and Wednesday (days 5 and 6). While younger people tend to clear their symptoms earlier, 85% of all arthritics will clear a large part of their arthritis symptoms by day 6. After clearing most report that they feel better than they have in years. Oh, I'm so intrigued by this, I never thought I'd start to feel worse before better...anyway I blew it now as I had a slice of pizza I'll have to start over, maybe with just gluten at first. Is there any reason we would feel worse before better? Thanks, Sue
Guest guest
Hi Sue, I am no doctor & certainly not an expert however do have yet another theory to add to the mix & that is because you have cut out the gluten & dairy the abx is now able to reach it's target so perhaps what you are experiencing is not only withdrawal from these food groups but also a severe herx ?? Maybe someone else will jump in here & give their 2 cents worth as well? Maz
Guest guest
It's not so much the withdrawal symptoms of giving up the gluten, dairy & sugars it's the herxing because the antibiotics can finally reach their target now that you have stopped eating that stuff; & your are suffering from withdrawal as well! Of course you would feel better after eating the pizza, you were really craving the gluten & you gave your body what it wanted....lol Think about it, if big coffee drinkers just stop drinking coffee they feel like crap with caffine withdrawal. It's the same thing but with different food groups. Maz > > > Really? Can you have a herx to something you withdrawing from your body....not adding? Interesting. Well I blew it anyway, I was feeling SO bad I ate a slice of pizza....oddly enough the next day I felt good....not I'm bad again. Such a puzzle I just get so tired. >
Guest guest
and I might add (to reinforce what you are saying Maz): that when that coffee drinker stops, he feels like crap....so he has a small cup of coffee, and guess what......he feels better !! (but not really). After many months of no dairy, I'm liking having yogart now. After thinking that dairy could feed these organisms/or slow down AP......I'm going to stop the yogart. I could really see how beneficial it would be to keep a food diary, and daily diary in general, but I'm sure I'm not the only one............but I roll my eyes to doing " just one more thing " . sally rheumatic Re: Elimination diet success? Guest guest
Thanks for your input Sally. I know how hard it can be in the beginning, I have been there done that, & yes for about 7mths I did keep a food diary, but must admit it became a pain in the a..se so I stopped it. I discovered quite quickly that if I did get a reaction it was always within about 6 hrs of whatever food/drinks caused it & I can always remember what I ate or drank, although it took me a while to realise that not all cafes, juice bars & coffee shops tell the truth about their products; ie juice bars over here generally don't actually use fresh fruit or vegetables, they buy it in & yes there is preservatives in it & loads of sugar etc. When it was tough going the only thing I always remembered was my AP Dr saying 'the bugs actually feed off this stuff so do yourself a favour & don't eat it' the result of that simple statement was that I was always mindful they needed starved not fed! Guest guest
I've heard it called a " healing crisis. " Have been through many of them. It seems a cruel thing when you are taking steps to improve your health, that you feel so bad. Here's a link to some info on it and a short excerpt: " The more toxic one's bodily systems are, the more severe the detoxification, or healing crisis. It is characterized by a temporary increase in symptoms during the cleansing or detox process which may be mild or severe. You may feel worse and therefore conclude that the treatment is not working. But these reactions are instead signs that the treatment is working and that your body is going through the process of cleaning itself of impurities, toxins and imbalances. " http://falconblanco.com/health/crisis.htm The Healing Crisis AKA: The Cleansing Reaction, The Detox Reaction, and The Herxheimer Reaction Hang in there. There is light at the end of the tunnel.
