Hi Jan,

Might be a better option to google Strontium and buy it online. I've found it

difficult to find a descent strength in the health shops...

rheumatic New Chapter Bone Strength?

Hi -

I read the posts about Strontium for bone health and went to the health food

store to get some. All they had was " New Chapter Bone Strength " - a

whole-food Cal/Mag, Vit D3 and K2 Complex - with 5 mg of Strontium in a day's

dose.

Is this enough Strontium for the great bone protection I read about on the

posts?

I have SLE (diagnosed Summer '06) and presently take 12.5 mg of Prednisone.

I have my first AP appointment this coming week.

Txs for ALL the encouragement on this site!

Jan,

The product you describe has some good components but the strontium is

so little that I wonder why they put

it in, except for the name.

Strontium, usually in the form of citrate, is a proven , safe and

inexpensive bone builder. My wife takes it and even though

she was on prednisone for 4 years her bone density never went down.

If you want solid info on strontium check Vitamin Research Products

(vrp.com) and look for the strontium article.

The standard dose is about 600 mg per day taken away from calcium to

avoid interference in absorption.

Since you will be taking the strontium for a long time, I suggest to by

it from a mail order firm.

Hi Jan. I buy mine over the internet. I buy strontium citrate. I take

two capsules per day 454 mg. and have been doing so for one year. I take

the strontium in the morning, and before lunch I begin multi dosing

calcium with magnesium & other minerals. I just received my DEXA report

and my bone density improved wonderfully.

*Every* web site I've read says that when you take calcium with

strontium, then calcium 'wins'. Calcium and strontium compete for

absorption and for receptor sites that promote bone remodeling. So, you

won't be able to rely on getting the strontium benefit when it is mixed

with calcium.

Remember that strontium <http://www.drhoffman.com/page.cfm/440> is very

closely related to calcium <http://www.drhoffman.com/page.cfm/453>. They

both utilize the same carrier protein for transport. Calcium

<http://www.drhoffman.com/page.cfm/453> will win this tug of war

effortlessly. The take home message is to take strontium

<http://www.drhoffman.com/page.cfm/440> 4 hours away from Calcium

<http://www.drhoffman.com/page.cfm/453> (preferably other minerals as

well) before bed. Currently, I dose strontium

<http://www.drhoffman.com/page.cfm/440> at 681mg in one dose prior to

bed (each strontium citrate capsule contains 227mg of pure strontium

citrate = 3 capsules) on an empty stomach (defined as 2 hours after a meal).

THANKS, everybody, for your very helpful replies.

I will talk to my doctor (Dr. Mirkin - AP doctor) about it tomorrow, and will

read some more, and will likely order the strontium citrate over the

internet. I have saved all your emails to refer back to, and am encouraged

about the

possibility of good bone health as I work to get off the Prednisone.

Txs again,

Jan

How much calcium do you take a day, and how much at a time? I really need for

my bone density to improve. I have been taking Forteo every day by injection

and will get a dexa scan this Friday to see if it is helping.

Thank you,

Gloria

My mother used Forteo for two yrs, and it definitely helped her. Prior

to that, she was on Fosomax... but continued to break bones on Fosomax.

With Forteo, her DEXA scans didn't show on increase... but she stopped

breaking bones. I got a close look at what it's like to have bad

osteoporosis... so to me, osteoporosis is frightening.

In addition to the strontium, I take 1500 mg calcium citrate & 700-800

mg magnesium citrate. The brand I usually end up using is Citrical Plus

(Target) - includes a smattering of minerals & not a bad bang for

buck. Citrical doesn't have much magnesium, so I take that separate.

Also for bones, I take vitamins K2 and D3.

Hi Amy,I was just at my doctor's last week and have osteoporosis also.It

was caused by the methotrexate that I took for 4 years and the

prednisone I took for 6 months.Doc said regular calcium, magnesium and

vit D would not help much and to use Calcium Oronate and Calcium

Aspertate anhydrous for best results. Lynne G./SD

I take methotrexate but not prednisone. Are you sure methotrexate causes bone

loss?
