nails breaking - any ideas on the cause?

My husband recently committed to eating the NT way, which he does about 90% of

the time. Since then, his nails have been breaking easily. He has about a cup

of raw, grass-fed milk a day, a whole food multivitamin, lots of sushi, some

cooked grass-fed beef a few times a week (when we remember to thaw it), some raw

egg yolks each day and virgin coconut oil (in egg nog), and veggies. He feels

great, his blood pressure is normal now (after being high or borderline for many

years) and he's lost some weight without trying. Any ideas on why his nails are

now breaking more easily? Any thoughts on solutions?

Thanks

Dana

Usual cause is lack of Omega-3 or Omega-6 fatty acids. Perhaps cod-liver oil or

flaxseed oil as a

supplement would help. It usually takes 3 - 4 weeks to see a difference.

PS -- since he is eating fish that contains Omega-3, perhaps he is missing

Omega-6, and should take

evening primrose supplements, or black current, or borage seed oil.

Dana,

Real quick just off the top of my head could be an

assimilation/digestion issue such as a need for enzymes and or hcl

and or trace mineral def.

If you need more answers let me know.

Your nails take 6 months to a year to grow out, depending on nutrition

(better nutrition, faster growth). Rather than look at recent dietary

changes for the cause, look at changes made 6 months to a year ago.

My nails soon became brittle when I went all raw. Rather than impune

my recent dietary change, I looked back 6 months (which was when I

started eating cooked meats) and 1 year (which was when I added eggs

to my formerly lacto-veg diet). Six months on raw meat diet has left

me with very strong fast-growing nails.

Did you try the home-made gelatin mentioned in NT? Also, I personally

believe that minerals is one key to better hair and nails - from vegetables

a la the Bieler Broth mentioned in NT or juiced without cooking. Also, I

have found that oysters are rich in zinc and copper and other minerals that

seem to help my hair a lot and I assume (since hair and nails are made from

the same stuff) would help nails as well.

If they were not breaking before (on a poorer diet) then I would wait

about six months or so, they will probably come around. Also I would drop

the whole food " multivitamin " and replace it with some concentrated whole

foods. IMHO, the best can be ordered from 1(800) HERBDOC. It is called

Super Food. Used it, or something similar, all the time with people who

were suffering from far worse thins than breaking nails. :-)
