Hi,

I don't know if this will help, but. I had a similar situation and kept a log of

every phone conversation and every bill I received.  I knew I did not owe this

money. I eventually wrote a letter with one of the bills enclosed and said that

what they were doing was harassment and it needed to stop immediately. I never

got another bill or phone call.

Good Luck,

Deb

Hi all,

Wondering if any of you out there have any info on this issue? To make a long

story short, it took me over a year to get approval from my ins for a tx ordered

by my rheumy, DR. Whitman.

Ins finally agreed..been receiving it 3 yrs.

Hospital where I receive my tx, billing dept. is simply horrendous.

We receive bills that we don't owe stating that ins has paid and the balance is

ours...I call ins and find that they did not bill them as I have a

secondary..Beginnin g of 08 I received 6 bills, I called our ins and found that

we did not owe any of them...that the hosp had billed incorrectly and not b

illed our secondary.

Hospital makes me sign a paper prior to tx that I will pay for tx...which as my

ins tells me, if you sign it, and agree to p ay for it...and the hosp advises

you of the charges in advance of the tx...you are liable for the r emainder of

the contract balance, not paid by ins..I sign it..because if I don't, it states

I am refusing tx...but I write, I AM ONLY AGREEING TO PAY ANY PORTION LEFT THAT

WOULD BE MY DEDUCTIBLE AND OUT OF POCKET PER MY INS...t hereby negating what

they have me sign..Numerous other issues...

Anyway, I filed a BBB complaint on their secondary billing people, in Fl, I get

my tx in Indiana..the woman there is rude, does not return calls and yells when

you call to question a bill...Since so many are in error, I have to call on each

bill...call my insurance... etc...After 3 yrs of this, I filed a complaint at

the FL BBB..

So can the hospital where I get my tx, refuse me tx on this service. It has been

approved by my insurance and ins has been paying...

Thanks for any info.

Thanks, Deb, I did that...took a 6 pg letter in after 2 months of erroneous

bills that took me about 10 hrs each week to straighten out...at my t x in

Feb...I hand delivered a letter to the hosp ADM office...with copies of the

bills where the hospital stated, BALANCE IS YOURS, INSURANCE HAS PAID...and

showed them that my secondary had not been billed...never have received another

bill from them..but think since I filed this BBB complaint about their billing

agent, Sonic Billing in FL, the hospital may try to deny me tx...I also

complained because the hospital told me that they were filing appeals to

Medicare to cover my tx...(Medicare is my primary) Hosp told me for over 7

months that they were filing and had filed the appeals..Medicare quit covering

my tx in Jan 07...by the time I requested documentation of the appeals

supposedly filed by the hosp to Medicare...they had NOT filed ANY appeal and the

dates for appealing it had long since passed by...I added that to my complaint

letter.

Hi Deb,

As far as I know no hospital can resuse treatment. Also there is a plan that

pays for people that do not have ins. I do not remember the name of it but I

willl find out for you.

Do you by any chance have Humana?? I do and at first they did the same thing

to me. I asked to talk to a supervisor. If that supervisor did not help I

called another time and asked for a supervisor explaining that the other

could not help and could she or could she pass me to someone who can. I had

to do that a few times before I go one that had to come from somewhere else

and she was sooo great. There are those that only work there and there are

those that actually know what they are doing.

Hope this helps.

Hi Carol, thanks for the post. I do have insurance and it has approved my tx for

this year and is paying. The hospital has been awful. They bill me.....stating

that ins has paid and I owe the balance...then when I call (spend hours on the

phone on hold) I find that they have NOT billed my secondary yet...so I don't

owe...stuff like that...then they LOSE my ins info and I have to call them and

give it over and over...its a mess...AND when I call to ck on a bill...the one

billing office they use, a billing office, Sonic Billing in Florida...the owner

is snotty, demands I call the hosp to see why my pamt has not been

posted...stuff like that...all stressful and time consuming...The hosp lied tome

at one point and told me ins was not paying and wanted me to pay for tx up

front...then be reimbursed when ins paid...I called in the local media...lying

from my hosp bed, receiving tx...and the hosp backed down...told me I was

confused, mistaken..etc...uh huh!

Yep, I wrote a letter and hand delivered it to the adm ofc in the hosp in

Feb...so far, no more bills from them..only the Indiana Blood and Marrow TX

office in Fl that does billing...billing for the DRs in the hosp that do my

tx...I get it in Indiana at ST. Francis...so far, they have stopped the

erroneous billing...but the other billing, IBMT..nope, they still bill...and the

woman I have to deal with is snotty and rude...I sent a complaint on her billing

service to the BBB of Florida..now it seems like the place where I get my

tx...is waffling alot...etc...

That is why I wondered if they could deny me tx? I have ins...and ins has

approved tx...and is paying...

Ethel, I am having the problem with the hosp where I receive my

photopheresis...since my letter the hosp stopped erroneous billing but the

Indiana Blood and Marrow Transplant (IBMT) that operates inside the hospital,

has this awful billing office in FL....

In May I took the 36 bill with me to tx because the FL billing office, the

outside billing agent they hired had not sent an envelope to mail back in pmt. I

verified with my ins company that I owed the bill and asked at my tx...where

should I pay this? The next day, I was told by my nurse, that he had called the

IBMT billing dept there at the hosp and I could pay the bill there at the desk

when I left...so I did...Then in late June, I received a bill from MS. Rude in

FL stating it was 31-60 days late...I called her, she was rude and tol dme to

call the hospital...I then called the IBMT billing dept at the hosp, left a

msg...then I emailed the BBB in FL and filed a complaint on this woman who runs

her own business and apparently feels she does not have to be polite or answer

questions when patients call to discuss the billing statement...nor does she

feel she has to include such minor things as envelopes to return payment or

indeed an address where paymt should be sent...

This woman answered the complaint that I filed at the BBB stating that I was

told NOT to pay the bill at the hosp, that it would delay it...a lie...since I

was specifically told to pay it there...

This has gone on for years...the hosp billing is awful...and they have tried

various stunts such as assuring me when Medicare decided to not pay for this

tx...that the hosp would be filing an appeal...then when I requested copies of

said appeal, and kept requesting copes...I was finally told that no, they had

not filed any appeal AND my time limit for filing appeals on Medicare covering

this tx...the time was expired..so I can no longer appeal that Medicare cover

this tx, as they used to cover it...

I did write a 6 pg letter to the hospital re all the billing issues in Feb,

2008...hand deliver it to the ADM office and have heard nothing back...

Now....they seem to be fooling around, delaying my tx etc...and the last time I

was there, in May...(I have been receiving this tx for 3 yrs) I have one good

vein...the nurse...that had never had any problem...stuck me and stuck me...and

had to wiggle it all around...saying he did not know what was wrong with the

vein...I only have the one good one! I found that a bit odd...could be what

happened...but I know the hosp is not happy I refuse to pay what ins does not

cover...they have a contract with them...and the hosp receives about $12,000 a

tx...they have me sign a paper prior to tx...informing me of the cost...$20,000

and stating that the patient is responsible for costs not covered by ins...to

which I sign each paper..I am only agreeing to pay costs left according to my

ins plan, deductible and out of pocket maxs!

I really wonder if the hospital, and the tx people, Indiana Blood and Marrow

Transplant, operating inside the hospital...can they refuse my treatment? I have

insurance, it has given them another year (2008) of approval for this so called

" experimental " treatment and ins has been paying them...according to contract.

The constant stress and not being able to do anything about it is frustrating.

Any ideas out there?

Thanks, Debbie

Hi Deb,

Its cooky not Carol!

Do you have Humana?

Do you ask to talk to a supervisor?

Once I had something similar happen. I asked the ins company if they had 3

way calling. So I got both of them on the phone with me at the same time. If

the ins co say they do not have it call the hospital administrator and they

definitely have it. Explain your situation.

Hope you get out of this mess but I don't have high hopes. (silly grin).

I have taken my letter to the ADM ofc at the hosp...no one ever has contacted

me...they just quit sending bills...from them...still get them from the other

billing ofc, IBMT...they function inside the hosp. Either way...its still a

mess... the way I see it, I have ins...t hey are paying and they approved tx...

If any of them, IBMT or the hospital starts screwing around with my tx...I have

all the bills where they stated I owed them...and I did not...and I have the

emails from my supposed patient rep, stating they were appealing the decision of

Medicare NOT to cover my tx...and they did not...and this last bill stating it

was past due...when I paid it immediately at the hospital...I guess I call in

the media in Indy again...The consumer watch dog has come out before... I guess

I can call him again if I start ge tting the run around. That is all I can think

of...

It is rather like, they make all these mistakes...I continually have to call

them and regive my ins info...every week...this was happening...then when I ask

for a supervisor, I am the YOU KNOW WHAT...

Thats fine...I can be that person if I have to be...as long as they don't screw

with my tx...I am just waiting..
