Guest guest
This is a good question. I've read lots of books by thyroid docs and they all say something different about iodine with hashi's. The best one I've read is called " Iodine, Why you need it and why you can't live without it " . He addresses these issues in this book. It's a small, very inexpensive book with lots of info and history on iodine and thyroid problems, inc. hashi's. Iodine....good or bad? I've read so many different things about Iodine use. I was wondering if its good or bad for someone who has antibodies present? Any thoughts? Findings? etc... Thanks
Guest guest
While iodine has helped many people, there seems to be a subset that cannot tolerate it. There are hundreds of studies showing that it can cause and exacerbate Hashi's and I've seen enough posts from people suffering adverse effects (including myself) to know that not everyone can take it without adverse effects. There are some people with Hashi's that can take it, many who cannot. We don't know for sure why that is, but suspect it could be due to the presence of the TSI marker for Graves disease, which many hashi's have, but may not know it. I did test positive for it and cannot do iodine, so that seems to be a major factor. That said, I would just say that before one decides to use iodine to assess their own risk factors and both sides of the issue and at least then an informed decision could be made. > > I've read so many different things about Iodine use. > I was wondering if its good or bad for someone who has antibodies > present? > Any thoughts? Guest guest
What kind of adverse reactions?? Like, flu-like symptoms or what? Also, what test would that be called?? I showed the presence of certain antibodies... They thought I had Graves disease and gave me the RAI, now Im hypo...I still dont know for sure if it was Graves...they only tested my TSH and T4 back then and rushed me into the RAI before I knew anything. I have Anti-Thyroglobin <20 (range <40), and Thyroid Microsoma 394 HIGH (range <40). Would this be a call for doubting iodine use to be helpful? Im seeing a doc soon whom is big into the iodine treatment deal, and I dont want to take it if I'll feel worse. Any other tests done to find out if I even need Iodine?? Thanks > We don't know for sure why that is, but suspect it could be due to > the presence of the TSI marker for Graves disease, which many hashi's > have, but may not know it. Guest guest
Hi , Some reactions can be like going hyperT--increased heart rate, sleeplessness, anxiety, twitching, arrhythmias. Yes, it looks like you have Hashi's, which often overlaps with Graves. Have you had your TSI tested? TSI is the exact name of the test. Presence of this above a 2 or 3 can show a tendency to go into Grave's given the right factors, of which iodine is one. I am on a Grave's forum and many there must avoid iodine, even iodized salt, as it will cause their TSI to increase along with hyper symptoms. Even if you are not positive for TSI, you still have Hashi's and there are plenty of studies out there (and personal experiences) showing that iodine can exacerbate and even cause it. So be sure to do plenty of research if you are considering taking it. So if you haven't had the TSI test done, you might want to consider it. > > What kind of adverse reactions??
