Guest guest
Trader Joe's sells cage free and fertile eggs for 1.79/dozen. At least, in Sacramento, CA area. I take it fertile eggs can't be produced in machine controlled farms, can they? Guest guest
Salem, Oregon -- I am paying (direct from farm) : -- 2.50/doz for eggs (they are going to soon be selling the same eggs at a farmer's market in town for 3.00/doz.) Chino Valley ( I think that is the brand) organic (pastured?) eggs sell for 3.99 a dozen in the natural food store here. -- 3.50/gallon for whole milk. With a 2.00 one time deposit on the glass jars. She skims the cream off of some of the milk (for her own use) and sells the skimmed milk for I think 3.00/gallon. I wish I could get just raw cream, in addition to whole milk -- because I can't really make much butter with the amount of cream a I get from the milk. So I am still buying butter. My parents in Missouri can get them for about that, but here in the Washington DC area, pastured eggs are $3-4/dozen, raw milk is $4-5/gallon, raw cream $4/quart. But it's worth it. What are other people paying in various parts of the country? Jill Nienhiser -----Original Message----- From: Barb Carr [mailto:bdcarr@...] Sent: Wednesday, March 13, 2002 6:23 PM Subject: questions for farmer Hi all, I just found a farmer who sells raw milk close to my house!! I'm very excited ($2.25/gallon, not bad!). I'm not sure what questions to ask him to make sure I'm getting good quality food. The cows are grass fed after May 1st. Until then it is mostly hay, some corn. Is this okay? He sells eggs $1 per dozen so I'm thinking maybe they aren't great (it's so cheap!). What do I ask about the chicken feed (he said they eat corn, mash, oats and lay ????) Is there something in particular I should look for in assessing whether these eggs will be good or not? Also, sometimes they have butter but not often. Is it hard to make butter yourself? Thanks, Barb
