The bad news for you is that he's the only one who does it and he's in Durham. The good news is that being the only one who does it, he's the expert and where there's a will there's a way! Don't know what your situation is with regards to insurance, travel capabilities, etc., but here's a few suggestions anyway... Check with your insurance co. and see if they cover Laparoscopic Bypass Surgery. See if Dr. R. and Durham Medical Center are in your network. Based on what they tell you that will give you some idea as to what your next step is. Dr. R. does give a discount for those who self-pay and there have been numerous discussions lately about how to come up with the $$. One recent suggestion was to borrow from your 401K. It's a bit of a haul, but you could drive and plan to stay the full week for the post-op check, or coordinate with your own Dr. to do it and leave earlier. If you want to fly, but don't have the $$, start checking online for deals. Talk to folks you know...church, family, etc. and see if anyone might have frequent flyer miles they would be willing to donate to you. Maybe someone could loan you $$ or make a gift to you. I've also heard of people having fund raisers to get the $$ for surgery and all. Garage sales work too! BTW, where do you live? In MA? I was born in Holyoke and have tons of relatives between Boston and CT. Anyway, hope this helps. Best of luck! {{HUGS}} in FL MGB Hopeful BMI 51 " He who began a good work in you will be faithful to complete it until the day of Christ Jesus. Guest guest
Dr. Rutledge is the one and only Dr. who does the MGB. Sorry, he is in N.C. There are many from other states that have been approved though! I think that it is the cream of the crop as far as WLS go. Take a look at clos.net and you will see what we are talking about!
