Goya is one brand. I was in a normal grocery...but one in the barrio...where I hoped I might find coconut oil et al. No real lard. Did buy some kidneys though. (they don't sell many innards in the 'burbs here.) Check the labels if you buy lard. I would guess that the purpose of hydrogenation is to make sure it doesn't get too soft in the heat. Had a little better luck at Wild Oats Market. Bought some pasteurized-but-not-homogenized whole milk. Tasty! Makes me wonder what raw milk will be like. It was appalling though...all these national brands of allegedly wonderful righteous milk, and they were all ultra-pasteurized. I felt like a real food geek; couldn't even shop in the health food store. Made the NT gingerbread Fri. night. Lovely stuff, but real rocket fuel for me. I cut most of it up into small pieces and froze it. Gave girlfriend some too...haven't heard the reviews yet.
