Regarding the “Position Paper on Diagnosis and Treatment of Heavy Metal

Toxicity in Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD)”

Please be aware that the “position paper,” which is being circulated

(Version 1.2, 10/2000) is a DRAFT, not a final, agreed-upon document

The problem of heavy metal (especially mercury) intoxication is receiving

increasing attention.  At a recent “Think Tank” held in Phoenix, sponsored

by the Autism Research Institute, a small committee of concerned Defeat

Autism Now! (DAN!) physicians agreed to critically examine the present state

of the art in diagnosing and treating heavy metal toxicity and to come up

with reasonable recommendations for dealing with the problem safely and

effectively.  There are many differences of opinion, and the goal was to

resolve the differences and develop the best plan possible--considering all

the factors.

The manuscript being circulated is the just a DRAFT of the planned paper.

After the rest of the group of knowledgeable and experienced physicians has

had an opportunity to comment, criticize and revise the first draft, we will

convene a consensus conference (face-to-face or teleconference) to help

resolve the differences and to refine the paper.  We hope to accomplish this

by early December.  This is not a simple task. Please be patient.
