Guest guest
> > Can you help me with this information? My congressman has asked me to call his office on Monday with this information and he is instructing one of his representatives to look into this. Dear Roni, I'm sorry I can't help with original costs of Minocin when the patent was owned by Lederle (this was before my time), but if you contact Dr T in Boston, you might find out more information. This link on Road Back tells quite a story: http://www.roadback.org/index.cfm/fuseaction/aboutrbf.display/display_id/255.htm\ l This article was written in 2002 and it's interesting that in 2006, Wyeth (who had purchased Minocin from Lederle), then conveniently gave distribution rights to Triax, here in the US, a dermatological pharmaceutical, who then starting packing Minocin up in funky, extortionately expensive zith packs that included a cute combo of acne lotions. Who in heavens name would pay 7 or 8 times the cost for these zit packs (not insurance companies!)!!! See marketing pic here: http://www.triaxpharma.com/which_page_8.html Wyeth also gave manufacturing and distribution rights of brand Minocin to Stiefel in Canada, but as Canada has a price ceiling on all pharaceuticals (due to nationalised health care), the price is greatly reduced. Today, many in the US are forced to buy Stiefel brand Minocin for $165 for a hundred count of these capsules from online pharmacies. I don't know if this will help or harm your case for the Congressman to know this, though. But, definitely read the above link...Dr T might be a good resource to you if you can get a direct line to him on this topic. The article states: " Trentham's translation of the letter: If minocyline worked, it might compete with a blockbuster drug called Enbrel that Wyeth now markets for both adult and juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. Enbrel costs $1,300 per month for adults and has life-threatening side effects, while Wyeth's brand of minocycline, called Minocin, costs only $280 for an adult monthly dose, Trentham said. And unlike Enbrel, minocycline is no longer under patent, so many companies could benefit from the drug's success. " So, according to this article Minocin used to cost $280 for an adult monthly dose (I presume for 60 capsules). Dr T saw Wyeth's refusal to provide Minocin for his trials as being a potential source of competition and, in years following, it's interesting that Wyeth then found a way to dispense with it by successfully by selling rights to a company producing acne meds that would raise the price beyond what your average rheumatic could afford...it's also well beyond the price that your average parent of a teen suffering from pimples could afford! Well done, Roni, getting your Congressman to listen. It's people like you who move mountains and we all benefit in the end! Thank you for your efforts Maz
Guest guest
Roni, My Minocin pricing web page is www.tmgp.com/minocin.htm. Prior to September 2001, Lederle sold its Minocin as a generic minocycline, which was identical to brand name Minocin. Generic minocycline by Lederle was sold for $70.00 per hundred 100 mg capsules at Wal Mart. If necessary, I could dig up a receipt to support this statement, as I paid out of pocket. Regrettably, in September 2001, Lederle stopped selling its generic minocycline. Brand name Minocin by Lederle was always more expensive than its generic, but coming up with historical pricing for brand name Minocin will be difficult. One data point is stated in page 331 of http://www.rheumatology.org/publications/guidelines/raguidelines02.pdf This paper, published in February 2002, shows an annual cost of $2,592 for 100 mg of Minocin taken twice a day, or 730 capsules. This corresponds to $355 for one hundred 100 mg capsules. This amount is approximately one third of the $1,029.28 which Triax Pharmaceutical started to charge for one hundred 100 mg capsules of Minocin in 2006. Triax is currently charging $578.81 for fifty 100 mg capsules of Minocin, which corresponds to $1,157,62 for one hundred 100 mg capsules of Minocin. Please see http://bonehome.com/druginfo/pricebrandimage?cid=med & drugid=6906 & drugname=Minoci\ n+Oral & monotype=pricebrandimage (make sure that this entire URL is on one line). Guest guest
Sue, keep your son on ascorbic acid (I am 120 lbs and I can handle 1/2 tsp. of this in water) along with one capsule of vitamin K a day.? You would rather him have some hyperpigmentation more than him not having the meds.? If you can, try to get him some iv's of clindamycin to get him started.? SD is a nasty one.? What you do is to give him enough ascorbid acid to get almost to the point of diarrhea.? If he gets diarrhea, then that is too much.? Back the amount off until you get there.? Best of luck to you and your son.? This is not an easy journey but you must be his strength.? Re: rheumatic Harold-minocin Roni, I changed from Minocin to minocycline. Guest guest
I would never take him off the AP - I just did not know how much C or K to give him. We have him on so many vitamins and other things as well, bromaine, paba, serrapeptase, MSM, vitamin E, omega 6, turmeric, probiotics. Dr. S in Iowa does not feel it is necessary to give him the IV's right now because he does seem to be responding to the orals. I am most concerned with his lack of mobility in his wrists. Also, has had chronic diaharrea his whole life and I just got it under control with probiotics so I have to be careful. All suggestions are welcome and appreciated! I began to develop hyperpigmentation and then switched to Teva doxycycline. They both seemed effective to me and the hyperpigmentation faded with the doxy. I changed doctors and am trying Minocin again which I am getting from Canada. I seem to be starting to get some hyperpigmentation again, so I'm thinking of going back on the doxy. After Triax purchased it I was charged $480 for the same number of casules. I then changed to the generic. > I wrote a letter to Triax and sent it certified mail to the President, COO, SVP Sales and the VP Marketing on April 4, 2006. Not one of them bothered to give me the courtesy of a reply. > >
