Guest guest
Waverley, Dr. Perlmutter talks about hyperbaric oxygen therapy in the context of his discussion about treatments for multiple sclerosis. He says " Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is without question the most exciting innovation in the treatment of MS available today. " In the study he cites, from 1983, 55% of the untreated group experienced worsening of symptoms, 12% of the treated group did so. " . . . many of the treated patients actually experienced improvements in a variety of symptoms including mobility, fatigability, tremor, bladder control and visual symptoms. And to satisfy those who may choose to criticize the data, rest assured the study was randomized, double-blinded and placebo-controlled. " (the study was reported in the New England Journal of Medicine, 308(4):181-86m 1983.) He does recommend other supplements in addition to the HBOT including antioxidents and what he calls " cellular energetics " (B12, CoQ10). In paging through the book (I haven't finished reading it yet so maybe I shouldn't even be talking about it :-), I see that he refers to HBOT for stroke victims as well. On another oxygen-related topic: Here is a weird thought. Have you heard of the efforts to create automobiles that are powered by hydrogen? As I understand it, the fuel is water and the only emission is oxygen. What happens when we start using this technology to heat/cool our homes, power our businesses and run our cars? Will we be overwhelmed with an abundance of oxygen? Have our bodies adapted in any positive way to carbon monoxide and will we miss it? Will we be smarter, happier and healthier because we are breathing more oxygen or will the whole planet start on fire? Has anyone been to an oxygen bar? in Mississippi where the oxygen is so thick with humidity tonight it's like breathing underwater
