Guest guest
Does anyone know what causes the traces of formaldehyde in some maple syrup? I was thinking of buying some and want to ask the right questions when I talk to the man who produces it. Thanks, Sharon __________________________________________________

Hi Sharon: Many farmers gather maple syrup with long lines of plastic hose into large buckets instead of having individual small pails on each tree. It cuts down the costs of gathering it, I guess. Sometimes the hoses clog up. To prevent this I understand formaldehyde is used although I am not sure how. Maybe the tree is injected. Personally, I would prefer formaldehyde in my body after I am dead, not before. Since the farmer may not wish to tell you if he uses formaldehyde, maybe just ask him if he has individual pails on each tree or does he use plastic hose.
