Guest guest
My serum potassium was 4.2mmol/L should be between 3.5 - 5.0. Bananas and potatoes affect me about 1.5hours after I have eaten them. Bree potassium > > Hi, > My neph has put me up to 300mg Avapro a day. I am finding that every time I eat potatoes I feel sick. When I was on 150mg Avapro I could not eat bananas as I would feel sick. I am wondering if I can' t tolerate potassium like I used to and if this is the case should I cut out all foods with potassium. But there poses the question what other vitamins would I also be cutting out by not eating potassium rich foods. Guest guest
Hi Jack A good renal dietician will tell you that you don't need to eliminate anything, just adjust and keep track of the amounts. You might have to severely restrict some high potassium foods though. Low protein, low sodium, low phosphorus and low potassium are all part of the pre-dialysis and dialysis renal diets, but not necessarily all to the same degree. This depends on the individual and his/her lab results. In your case, your potassium is starting to get up there. If it were to get to 6 or more, it could be dangerous. Potassium is the only one of the list I just gave that can be life threatening, so, it's something to take seriously, but by the same token, you don't want to go overboard either. Your body still needs some potassium, but you just have to reduce. Your next and subsequent blood works will tell you and your doctor how you're doing. We're you giving a list of foods of some kind? I mean, that's something you need to have. The goal for potassium is 1500 to 2500 mg per day. If you were not told any specific number, I would err on the side of caution and go for 1500mg per day, and then see where that gets you. There are plenty of low and moderate potassium foods in all food groups. Then there are the high potassium ones like oranges, bananas, potatoes, tomatoes, beans, raisins, etc. If you weren't given any handout or anything, I personally think you should ask for some specifics. It's unprofessional in my opinion for a doctor to just tell you to cut back on potassium without giving you any instructions at all. But, that being said, thank God we have the internet these days. Go to the Links page of my website www.igan.ca . There, there's a section where I've listed some " Nutritional Resources " websites that I think are useful and worthwhile. The first one, the USDA Nutrient Database gives you the potassium content of just about any food on the planet. The last two, " Diet in Renal Failure " and " Renal Diet Guidelines " . Don't hesitate to ask if you have any questions after checking those out. Pierre potassium > > > My MD has alerted me that my potassium levels are going up. Guest guest
Hi Bree, It would be important to talk with your Neph on the potassium. You have probably had your potassium levels checked, and any dietary restrictions on potassium would need to be based on those lab results. I would tell your Neph that potassium rich foods seem to be upsetting to you though. Guest guest
I agree with Walt, but it seems unusual that your neph would not mention potassium if yours was on the high side (which would be obvious from the blood work). I take Avapro, even on dialysis, and it doesn't seem to raise my potassium much if at all - but my dose is only 150 mg. It wouldn't hurt to call your doctor though. I'll bet you will be told your potassium is Ok and not to worry about it. I mean, it's not something a nephrologist would neglect to consider. How soon do you feel sick after eating the potatoes? It takes about 4 hours until they are digested enough for the potassium to make into your bloodstream. So, if you're feeling sick before that, it's probably something else. Potassium is what worries most renal failure patients most, simply because it's really the only thing we can eat that can kill us within a short time, but it usually takes a lot. I would NOT start restricting potassium without checking with your neph. Too low can be as bad as too high, and believe it or not, it CAN sometimes be too low in kidney patients. I was too low many times before I started dialysis (due to taking the diuretic furosemide). I don't think vitamin deficiency will be an issue. For one thing, you don't usually totally eliminate any potassium foods, just restrict how much you eat daily. For another, there are other low potassium fruits you can eat. Also, most people who would have renal failure advanced enough to be on a renal diet would also probably be told to start taking a special renal vitamin. But don't go by what I've said. Call your neph. Your latest potassium number should be readily available in your last blood work, so there's no reason to guess. Guest guest
For the top range one or the low range one? Low range? I dunno. I guess I'll just do the electrolytes every 2 weeks until they looks table. They haven't been til now. But tissue levels can be so different anyway. Awaiting my full blood analysis of my electrolytes! I woudl suspect lab error.
Guest guest
Whats the difference between high and low potassium symptoms? I woke up today with a horrible pain in my buttocks. Almost never have that. Wondering what it could be. Tickling in the heart is back now after 4 doses of 5 mcg T3. I wonder how many other conditions I have, in addition to Hypo and AF, causing me to feel so bad............ Feel like my whole body is rottening from the inside. The head and heart are the worst! I actually drove to the ER today, but changed my mind - Didn't go there. Now I feel worse again. I was wondering about doing Electrolytes and Glucose when I felt bad! Maybe it would tell something... A human being should not feel like This. It's not how it should be!
