Guest guest
Thanks so much for replying . The only problem is I live in the UK and the National Health Service and my GP are refusing to give me the IV's because my results are within range!!! Serum iron 20 (14-30)Serum ferritin 27 (10-120) I've contacted a few private Doctors who keep saying the same thing to me 'yes your ferritin is a bit low but its within the normal range and your Serum Iron is perfect' Then when I try to tell them everything I'm learning from you all about the ferritin and thyroid connection they say they've never heard about this!!!!! Do you know of any other types of iron I should try. Should I just keep trying the iron supplements despite the stomach pains? Thank you-your a life saver Josie To: RT3_T3 From: artisticgroomer@...Date: Thu, 11 Mar 2010 07:19:11 -0500Subject: Re: Low Ferritin but can't tolerate Iron supplements!!!!!! Guest guest
Have you tried starting at a lower dose and working it up gradually? That helps some people to tolerate them better but the Blue Bonnet iron seems to be the easiest on digestion.. none of it is easy though. -- Artistic Grooming- Hurricane WV http://www.stopthethyroidmadness.com/ http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/NaturalThyroidHormonesADRENALS/ http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/RT3_T3/ http://groups.yahoo.com/group/HypoPets/
Guest guest
As stated, the Blue Bonnet iron works well for many and I would add to that, using a cast iron skillet for cooking most of your meals will add tons of iron to your body. Iron leaches from the skillet and it's a good thing! Abundant Blessings,
Guest guest
> >But I'm having real problems, I'm getting SEVERE stomach cramps all day and through the night and am quite constipated (so am taking magnesium) Some people have said that a lot of vitamin C at the same time as the iron helps them. Get the 500 gram megadose ones and titrate up over a few days so you end up taking several grams each time you take iron. I'm in the UK as well and the NHS is useless when it comes to Thyroid. Guest guest
I have had better luck with Hema-Plex than I ever had with any other iron supplement. http://www.amazon.com/Natures-Plus-Hema-Plex-30-Tabs/dp/B0007KS4ZQ/ref=sr_1_2?ie\ =UTF8 & s=hpc & qid=1268316867 & sr=1-2 Hope you can get it in the UK. That stinks that you can't get iron IVs. They've done me a world of good. Take a look at this post for other ideas on how to find a place to get them and medical staff that is (hopefully) more knowledgeable about them. I wrote it for a friend in the U.S. but I hope maybe there is something here useful for the U.K. as well. http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/RT3_T3/message/36032 > > > Hi Everyone, > > > > I had my Iron tested and these were the results > > > > Serum iron 20 (14-30) > Serum ferritin 27 (10-120) > > > suggested that I start taking Iron. Guest guest
If it helps, I'll share my experience with you: I have repeatedly tested low in ferritin (14) and despite supplementation I have not been able to see an increase in ferritin levels. In fact, while on iron supplements (the good ones, mentioned here) I felt ill and shakey and pale. Seems the iron supplements were not doing me any good. I was taking up to 200 mg a day and ferritin labs remained at 14, consistently. Due to low ferritin I was unable to increase my t3. I was severely hypo yet could not tolerate t3 increases as I would get severe anxiety and hyperdefecation and other hyper symptoms, while at the same time experiencing hypo symptoms. Until a friend recommended I get my iron from animal meat. I began eating meat a few times a day (together with vitamin c and b complex and multivitamin/multimineral) Since eating meat every day I have been able to raise and tolerate my t3 from 30 mcg a day to 75 mcg a day in less than two months. On a day that I don't eat my meat I cannot tolerate my full dose of t3, and if I do take my full dose of t3 it is accompanied by anxiety (low ferritin symptom) I despise meat, but it's the only form of iron that helps me tolerate t3. HOpe this helps. > > > Hi Everyone, > > > > I had my Iron tested and these were the results > > > > Serum iron 20 (14-30) > Serum ferritin 27 (10-120) > > > suggested that I start taking Iron. Guest guest
Would you say more about your meat consumption? I've been unable to raise ferritin by more than 10 points in a month of taking high doses of iron (with plenty of unpleasant side effects). I'm seeing a doctor on Tuesday about iron IV's. But I understand that even if ferritin is raised via IV's, the levels may not stay up. 1. Have you had ferritin levels tested since starting regular meat consumption? 2. How much meat do you need to eat? Once a day or several times a day? 3. Is this red meat, or does poultry work too? I eat seafood several times a week, chicken a couple of times a month, haven't eaten red meat in a very long time. This would be a huge change, but considering the way I'm feeling, I'm desperate. Thanks so much for sharing your experience. Peggy Re: Low Ferritin but can't tolerate Iron supplements!!!!!! Guest guest
I am eating meat as I am typing, lol. I have not had success with poultry alone, or with seafood for that matter. I do include poultry, seafood, especially sardines, in my diet, but nothing comes close to red meat (or veal) The last time I tested my ferritin was at the beginning of FEb. of 2010. I am due for another blood test soon and indeed I am just as curious what the labs will show! I buy red meat (sometimes I buy veal) from the local butcher, and if possible I buy organic. No smoked or cured or processed meat; only freshly slaughtered meat. I eat roughly 6-18 ounces a day, in divided portions. Vitamin c helps with the iron absorption and the b-complex and multi help as well. Meat is my medicine. I will let you know as soon as I have latest ferritin labwork. > > Would you say more about your meat consumption?
