Hi Sally

You've got your fair share of health problems but I'm curious about the sleep

apnea....do you use a machine at night when you sleep? If not, get one....they

are expensive but they work. My friend had bad sleep apnea...always waking up

gasping for air....since she got the machine she sleeps well and it's also

monitored. Good luck.

Yes, Carol, I do have and use a CPAP machine. I can't sleep at all without

it. I need to get new mask and tubing, though, as what I have is worn out.

And I need to have my air pressure monitored and adjusted again. I don't

sleep as well as I did a few years ago.

Hi Sally

I'm so glad to hear you have the machine....CPAP? I didn't know the name of it

but I know you really need it. Hope you can get it fixed up in tiptop

condition. If it isn't working as well as it used to it might need a

tune-up....but sure glad you have it. One problem down, a few more to go? We

gotta keep our sense of humor, I think sometimes that's all that gets me through

some tuff days. Alley is a riot...she always gets me laffing when she does a

quirky email. Hang in Sally, you're in my prayers.

Carol, thanks for caring. And yes, Alley is great! Everyone here seems

great. I'm glad I found you all.

I'm on a diabetes list, too, that's really great. The past few weeks have

been hard on me, and the lists have helped to keep me going.

I'll be away for a week starting tomorrow. You all take care now!

Marge, did you have both of your hips replaced? I HAVE HAD ONE HIP DONE, BUT WILL NOT HESITATE TO DO THE OTHER IF NEEDED.

Are both of your knees in need of replacement? YES, MOST DEFINITELY. BONE ON BONE AND SO BAD THAT "PAIN" IS NOT ENOUGH WORD TO USE.

The reason for my question is that I have found out that both of my hips are bad, the right one worse than the left, my right knee and my right ankle. There is no way I will have all of these replacements, as I am an avid gardener and want to continue with my hobby.

IF YOU DO NOT HAVE THESE REPLACEMENTS, GARDENING WILL NO LONGER BE YOUR HOBBY. YOU WILL HURT SO MUCH YOU WILL NOT EVEN WANT A GARDEN.

I have been using my cane when I do much outdoor walking, and just this week bought myself a mobility scooter for day trips and vacations.

I TRIP ALL OVER A CANE AND I HAVE HAD A MOBILITY SCOOTER FOR TWO YEARS NOW.

I still do all my own housework,

I HAVE HIRED A CLEANING LADY --SUCH JOY TO BE FREE OF THAT.

and fear that much of what I love to do will not be tolerated with all of those artificial joints. I'm not ready to sit and watch the world go by yet.

NEITHER WAS I, BUT THAT IS WHERE I ENDED UP. MY WORLD HAD SHRUNK TO ONE ROOM WITH COMPUTER, A STILL-ADORING HUBBY, A BUNCH OF LOVING GRANDKIDS NEARBY, AND ONE BIBLE CLASS. THAT IS ALL.

Are you planning to have your knees replaced?

YES, ONE WAS DONE IN MARCH, AND THE OTHER WILL BE DONE NEXT WEDNESDAY. I APPROACH IT EAGERLY. IT IS TOTALLY TRUE--WHEN YOU WAKE UP, IT DOES NOT HURT.

Will you be absolutely mobile afterward?

WHATEVER I END UP AS, IT HAS TO BE BETTER THAN WHAT I WAS! WE ARE PLANNING A TRIP TO THE WHITE SANDS OF DESTIN, FLORIDA IN JANUARY, AND I WILL REPORT THEN. HOW'S THAT?

Hi Joy

I'm very happy with the results of my hip replacements. I walked with a crutch for about 1 1/2 years before the surgeries and couldn't do much of anything except sit in a chair. I really did get my life back.

Thanks Carolyn,

I do agree with you, and especially as it all turned out so well for

Cameron! I just wish there was a guarantee that it will make a big

difference-even though he's 17, it's not something he's ready to

decide for himself, so we feel that we have to make the decision. I

am going to use the next few days to really do my research and find

a way to present it all to Stefan, so we can decide together. The

best would be if he could 'coast' with it until his college is done.

He is able to go about his life pretty well-eating and drinking(a

lot of water/orange!) and going to college, only regurges a bit at

night and twice (so far) at the dinner table.

Maybe I'm in denial as to how bad it is-but I think Stefan is too.

I will take 's advice too and try to get a second opinion.

I don't know if I'm right about you guys in the States-but I think

you get to see the results of Bariums etc? We just got told about

the report-didn't get to see the film or the actual report, so feel

a bit cheated of info. I want to see for myself how much change

there has been in the esophagus since last time. Am I wrong in

thinking I should be able to?

The docs seemed to dither and put it to us to decide what to do on

Wednesday. And the questions we asked were not really answered. It

leaves me feeling a lack of confidence in the doctors, and that's

not good. Ah well.........

Best wishes for a Happy Easter

Hi Sally

I also broke my femur after knee replacement. I broke my leg 6 months and 4

days after my TKR. I am now just about 6 months past breaking my femur. I have

found pretty much the same challenges with Femur PT as with my knee.

Re: TKR happening on Tuesday

Hi

I have had both of my knees replaced (2007 and 2009) and am now recovering

from a shattered femur (almost 4 weeks ago). I did not go to rehab after

each knee replacement but came directly home after about 4 days in the

hospital each time. I also rented a hospital bed for my own convenience. This

time I spent 3 nights in the hospital then went to a wonderful rehab for 8

days. I have to say this recovery is much more difficult as I cannot put

any weight on the surgically repaired leg. So rehab or not.........that's

up to you. If you can just put yourself in the mindset that the first 2

weeks or so you need to concentrate on healing your body and rehabing that

knee. It does keep getting better and the surgery is so totally worth it.

Hi Dorie

I acrtually slipped on some water on my kitchen floor. Was walking

through the kitchen, slipped and my feet flew out from under me. Landed on my

side in front of the refrigerator. The impact was hard and I knew by looking

at and trying to move my left knee that I was in trouble. Paramedics took

me to the ER and i had surgery later that day. Doc had to make a large

incision on the side of my leg to get in there to pull it all together. It

happened 4 weeks ago this coming Tuesday and this non weight bearing is the

most difficult thing I have had to deal with.

what has been your experience? How did you break y our femur?

Sally

One of my PTs did question the break. She wondered if the femur shattered

so badly because of the knee replacement. Also, the break was about 3

inches above the knee joint so instead of going into the front of the leg, the

doc had to make a large incision down the side to be able to get in there

and pull it together.

Hi

Thanks for asking. I was in Mexico on vacation. The floor had been washed and

was wet. There was no sign saying it was wet, my foot slipped to the right and

the weight of my body went to the left. ....thus I had a spiral break. My OS

told me it was " fairly " common to see a femur break close to the prosthesis. Of

course you need the violent fall to go with it. It wont happen with a mere trip

and fall that everyone does from time to time.

Dorie & ,

How did you both break your femurs? Was it TKR related?

Sally, hi

You asked when does the pain stop. In my case I had a week of Clindamycin

IV's and 2 weeks later all the pain in my left hand was GONE. I did not

think it would last but it did. After that I would have a day here or there

that I felt less tired and less achy. Then I would have a day where one of

my finger or a toe would stop hurting and then hurt again. Then the pain

free area would last 2 days or maybe another would feel better and then hurt

again. I looked back at my story and it was more than a year before I had a

break thru and it was only after IV's.

Good luck Sally and don't worry it will happen.
