Guest guest
Hi. I haven't been online in a long time, but I had to respond to the mention of azithromycin. Does this drug work as well as minocin and doxy for arthritises? I suffer from Reactive Arthritis. I have been treated first with doxycycline (only in the time release formula doryx, since my stomach couldn't deal with the regular form- but it stopped working after 1 year) and minocin (which worked very well as long as it was the brand name Minocin in pellet form). The only time I would be symptomatic was a day or so before precipitation or high humidity. This summer, which was very hot and rain-free, was hated by most New Yorkers, but it was perfect weather for me and I thrived and felt great. I was able to " power walk " for at least 1 hour a day, was able to think clearly, and had a great time spending my time with my family. But, before that, in May, I felt once again that the minocin wasn't working as well as it should (but that it was working to some degree), considering the weather, so my Rheumie started cycling the minocin with tetracycline (which makes me so nauseous taking it on an empty stomach. I need to drink two glasses of water with the medication to prevent this from happening). I take minocin for a week and the next week I only take the tetracycline and so on. I didn't notice that the cycling wasn't working well, because the weather was great through the summer, so I didn't have the intense pain in my joints, exhaustion, memory loss, etc, that I get when the weather is bad. Now that we are into fall, I am beginning to feel my symptoms again. The weather forecasters make errors all the time in their predictions, but my body is always an accurate predictor of precipitation that will come. I could have predicted the tornadoes that hit Brooklyn and Queens two weeks ago, thanks to my pain level and exhaustion that kept me in bed, even though I live in the county over, on Long Island. In addition, we have been getting frequent rain and other weather changes These symptoms are only going to escalate and get worse, as we head into the winter. When winter comes, between the cold temperatures and regular precipitation, I spend my days in bed under the covers next to an electric heater. I seem to be affected badly by the cold and can't seem to warm my body, even though I wear up to five layers at a time. The only way I get any relief is by flying to a warmer climate and I had to do that three times last winter. I need to know what I should do, that would prevent me from feeling so sick. I was wondering if I should mention the azithromycin to my Rheumie. Should we cycle it with the minocin, or take it alone? Either way- what dosage is recommended? Another thing- do you think that regular doxycycline might work better for me, even though the doryx (time-release form) stopped working after a year? I now know about acidophilus, thanks to this great website- that might let my stomach tolerate the regular antibiotic. I would love to hear advice from as many of you as possible. I need to get my health back to where it should be. It has become very difficult for my family to live with me.. My husband has become so bitter about my health issues. I can't hold down a regular job, since the way I feel is totally reliant on the weather which is so inconsistent. My doctor would agree to anything I ask, since he was amazed at how well my body responded to the doryx and minocin. Hoping to hear from you soon. Mona G. rheumatic Re: Doxy and my stomach Hi, Carole. I am sorry that you are feeling ill effects. I was on Mino for over two years, then Doxy, now Azithromycin. This is my take on your question: You only need to be careful of taking the antibiotic with something else that will bind it (and reduce its effectiveness). This is especially iron, zinc, calcium, magnesium, aluminum, antacids. Some foods have more of these than others: milk, etc. So look at the ingredients...if no additives re: above and eat an apple or some other whole food (not processed) and take your abx. I did not have a digestion issue with Minocin except rarely. But when I did...usually digestive in nature, not the nausea with Doxy...I would take Bromelain (OTC supplement containing pineapple enzyme) and days I'm not taking abx, take probiotics, putting the biotics back into the system. Very important NOT to take probiotics with antbiotics...as you may guess the anti will counter the pro... Best of luck, O > > Ok - this is getting old - doxy on an empty stomach - wait one hour - > it gets really bad at the end of the hour - how much less effective is > the doxy if I add some food - or does someone have another idea? > > thanx > > carole > > -- > Carole S.
