Guest guest
Hi Cooky, Here's just one link on DILE caused by biologic drugs, but you can find this info on any of the official biologic drug websites, too, or any magazine advertising these drugs that lists the adverse events. I spoke with a lady down south who came to RBF looking for help, as she had developed DILE while on Enbrel for her psoriatic arthritis. I've cut and pasted the relevant bits for you, below the link. http://www.emedicinehealth.com/lupus_systemic_lupus_erythematosus/page2_em.htm " Reversible drug-induced lupus In the past, the drugs most frequently responsible for drug-induced lupus are procainamide (Procanbid), hydralazine (Apresoline), and isoniazid (Laniazid). However, newer medications have been associated with drug-induced lupus, such as the new biological agents used to treat rheumatoid arthritis, etanercept (Enbrel), infliximab (Remicade), and adalimumab (Humira). Generally, lupus that is caused by a drug exposure goes away once the drug is stopped. " And, here is some info on adverse neurological events, including MS, with the use of Enbrel...I think Humira carries the same warnings, but this can be easily looked up: http://www.rxlist.com/enbrel-drug.htm# " Neurologic Events Treatment with ENBREL® and other agents that inhibit TNF have been associated with rare cases of new onset or exacerbation of central nervous system demyelinating disorders, some presenting with mental status changes and some associated with permanent disability. Cases of transverse myelitis, optic neuritis, multiple sclerosis, and new onset or exacerbation of seizure disorders have been observed in association with ENBREL® therapy. The causal relationship to ENBREL® therapy remains unclear. While no clinical trials have been performed evaluating ENBREL® therapy in patients with multiple sclerosis, other TNF antagonists administered to patients with multiple sclerosis have been associated with increases in disease activity.7,8 Prescribers should exercise caution in considering the use of ENBREL® in patients with preexisting or recent-onset central nervous system demyelinating disorders (see ADVERSE REACTIONS). " My understanding of the use of minocycline for Lupus is that DILE is entirely different in its mechanism and so many AP docs, like Dr T in Boston, are using minocycline very successfully for their Lupus patients, though usually in lower, pulsed doses, just because Lupus patients tend to be a bit hypersensitive to most meds. My gut sense about the MS-like symptoms that may arise from TNF-blocking meds is that these folk may have undiagnosed Lyme, but this is just speculation on my part. Is that the info you were looking for, Cooky? Maz > > Hi Maz, > > > > Where did you find this info? > > > > . Also, very interestingly, some of the biologic drugs, like Enbrel and > Humira, used for rheumatic diseases, carry a risk of DILE (see package > insert) and may also induce MS in some folk, so the argument used by > rheumies that minocycline is bad because of this is a little ironic, > considering it takes a person a lot longer to get rid of one of those > injectible drugs from the system than just stopping oral minocycline, if it > should become a problem. > > > > > Thanks. > > > > cooky > > > >
