Guest guest
Hi, all! This is a question for all you cow owners out there or people familiar with dairying. There may be an opportunity for our co-op to purchase a cow or part ownership of a cow(s) in order to have raw milk from our own cow. This is legal in SC and would be an interim solution until the farmer who used to supply our milk can get his barn built and be certified as a Grade A Raw Milk Dairy. DHEC is considering my request and should get back to me this week. In the mean time, I need to draw up some sort of plan including contracts and agreements for the farmer and our co-op member-cow owners. Any thoughts on this? How much does it cost to feed a Jersey cow each day? They are in a large pasture with access to grass but also receive Purina Dairy Feed and some other stuff. What would be a reasonable amount of time for hand milking a cow and hourly rate to figure out labor costs? What amount for other operating costs should be included? An estimate of the average daily expense would be appreciated. We are thinking about buying a percentage of 2 cows so we aren't out of milk for the 60 days a year the cow is calving, etc. But I don't know. I haven't even made my pitch to the farmer yet. ine
