Guest guest
Speaking of adulterated food...was anyone aware that euthanized pets are fed to livestock? http://www.kmov.com/news/AllmanReport/kmov_news_allman_011109.64d98cc.html That includes the pentobarbitol that was used to euthanize the dogs and cats. It sometimes includes flea collars that the pet was wearing, as well. A recent study found that pentobarbitol survives the high heat used at rendering facilities where the carcasses are rendered. The FDA allows this, of course. One more good reason to patronize local farms that pasture their livestock, and do not use commercial livestock feeds. Euthanized pets have been used in livestock and pet foods for some time. If anyone is still feeding processed pet foods, you might like to know, among other unsavory ingredients, the FDA recently tested pentobarbitol levels in various brands. I have a Word doc titled " FDA/Center for Veterinary Medicine Survey #1, qualitative analyses for pentobarbital residue Dry dog food samples purchased in Laurel, MD, area, March - June 1998 " that has charts of the various levels of pentobarbitol the FDA researchers found in samples from various brands of dog food. Quite a few of them test positive for pentobarbitol. I guess it goes nicely with the ethoxyquin, BHA, BHT, 4-D meats, overprocessed grains and rancid fats that many pet foods are made of! Sounds like a typical t.v. dinner, doesn't it? BTW, someone mentioned that BSE is not yet in the U.S., BUT, CWD (Chronic Wasting Disease), a BSE-like disease is, and has been for decades. It's currently known to be in wild elk herds in Colorado. They may have infected farmed elk and deer that have been shipped to game farms in 15 other states. As well, cats can carry a form of TSE (Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathy, of which BSE is the bovine form). Cats can be found in livestock feed... Sometimes it seems like the world is going to hell in a handbasket...and people think I'm nuts for expending energy to find REAL, UNADULTERATED FOOD for my dogs and myself. Oh well...at least I'm a well-nourished kook with happy and well nourished pets!!! Suze Fisher Web Design & Development http://www.suscom-maine.net/~cfisher/ mailto:s.fisher22@...
