I once heard a rumor that when " material " somehow got backed up into the main

bile duct, (where the liver, gall bladder, and pancreas go into the small

intestine) that the liver thought it was injured and begin secreting

excessive amounts of " characteristics " that showed up in the blood tests.

Just a thought as there is nothing that can be done about this condition.

Wait, lay low, and see if it corrects itself.

My liver enzymes were elevated a few weeks ago, but so were my pancreas

enzymes. The doctor told me that my liver enzymes were elevated due to an

acute case of pancreatitis. When I found out that my liver enzymes were

elevated I was scared because they had never been elevated before when I had

pancreatitis. I was scared at the time because I thought that the

inflammation had spread to my liver also.

Kim,

I've just recently come across some references to the liver involvement

in the stuff I'm currently reading. It could be due to your fighting off

infection as Henry noted in his post. I can't remember off hand the

other reasons, so I'll try to keep a lookout and let you know what I

find out. I do know that there has been notations that chronic

pancreatitis can often have high LDH levels, but they don't really go

into why. It might be because a majority have their gallbladders removed

and that organ has a lot to do with processing fat.

Hi,

My son has elevated liver enzymes. An ultra sound showed that he had Fatty liver as well. You need to be careful of which seizures meds you use if the liver enzymes are elvated. These kids are at risk for liver problems. My son takes 3 seizure meds. Dilantin, Keppra, and Neurontin.

Good Luck

Liver enzymes can go up from all sorts of things. The main one to look at is the ALT and not the AST because it is more specific to the liver though not completely. Did they do a GGT? Ammonia? PT?

Viruses, and other illnesses, many many drugs, inflammation...these are examples of things that can cause a rise on liver enzymes. It is true that primary liver disease could cause it also. With her having been sick this could be why they are still up. has she been on any new drugs or antibiotics?

I don't know how high your daughter's levels are but if might be good to make a plan with the doctor and decide when you will re check these. It certainly would not be something you'd want to brush aside but it might not require the whole nine years of investigation either. he'd have to look at the whole picture of all the labs together and what the trend has been since they first went up. Is her liver enlarged?

In general, if her ammonia and clotting times are high (PT and PTT) this would indicate her liver is in more serious trouble. If they have not checked those levels and she has persistent elevations of the ALT, AST, GGT it might be good to look at them.

An ultrasound or a CT scan of the liver are a good starting place if you end up doing diagnostic testing.

I'm sorry she is not rebounding. Let us know how it goes.

elevated liver enzymes

sorry about the first one. My computer has a mind of its own sometimes

anyways I am writing this to ask about my daughter breana. Last month she had a virus that made her acidotic. At that time her liver enzymes were slightly elevated. The dr assumed it would go back to normal when she got better but it didn't. Does anyone know what his means? She has never had this problem before. Thank You, mom to 4yrs, Brook 2yrs, Breana 2yrs(confirmed mito ,optical atrophy, myoclonic seizures, hypotonia, and the most beautiful blue eyes in the world)

Anne:

Do you what it means to have high AST? Looking at the labs the

ALT was in normal range.

Also, does anyone know what ESR is? I am looking over old labs

sheets and they say these were high, I don't know what the normal range

is.
