You know, there ought to be a Native Nutrition webpage where members

could post their " war stories " for everyone to read. Or is there such a

thing already?

Hi. My wife and I were low fat followers from 1992 to about 1998.

Neither of us had weight problems, in the typical sense, as we were

both underweight. At 6'3 " , I weighed in at about 165 lbs, and my

tiny wife (she's just 4'11 " ) weighed only 85 lbs! We took our health

seriously, we exercised, and we tried to eliminate all fat from our

diets according to popular wisdom. I tried to gain weight,

unsuccessfully, for the next 6 years while feeling less and less

healthy. My wife also experienced a general decline in health, and

both of us suffered body composition degradation. By 1998, I was

still skinny, but I had poor muscle tone, too. I took an increased

interest in diet and, through trial and error, and thanks to the

internet, I found several bulletin boards that gave me some good

info. I started putting on some muscle, and then I read a post

referring to the WAP article " The Oiling of America. " What a

revelation that article was! Since adopting NT/WAP dietary habits,

I've managed to get up to a very lean 190 lbs in about 7 months. I

feel much healthier, and so does my wife when she eats properly as

well. I'm really angry that I did so much damage to my body while

simply trying to stay healthy. ALWAYS do your own research, and read

studies and journal entries firsthand. Trust no one with your

health, take care of yourself!

*****I originally was a vegetarian/vegan because I thought it was better

for me, and having been near death at the tender age of 19 I subsequently

became very interested in my health. But I was never a philosophical

vegetarian and quickly became convinced through my own studies that a

meatless diet was not necessary to obtain optimal health, so I gave it

up. I decided that a " land flowing with milk and honey " was better than a

plate of vegetables only.

<snip>

I had been struggling with fatigue, back about 1984. I had read

Protein Power and tried it for a couple of weeks but didn't see any

improvement.

****Are you sure it was Protein Power? To my knowledge that book was not

available in 1984. Could be wrong though.

I read Atkins book too. But after having been warned

that I had borderline high blood pressure someone gave me Pritikin's

book. I also found " Eat to Win " in a bookstore. It seemed to help a

bit with fatigue but I found most of the foods unappetizing. By 1992

I was 30 pounds overweight and suffering a lot of fatigue, had full

blown high blood pressure. That is when I found a support group for

Dr. McDougal on the Prodigy online service (pre-internet). Dr.

McDougal had a radio show too in which he interviewed Dr. Dean

Ornish. Both programs did works for me. I lost 30 pounds in about 4

months. I had a lot more energy, but it was only temporary. I spent

years trying to get it back thinking there was something wrong with

me. About a year ago I heard a local radio talk show about low

carb. At first I thought the host was full of crap. How can the

gubbermint (government) and all these scientist and researchers be

wrong and this one person with a PhD in exercise and nutrition be

right? But, I kept listening and he eventually was describing me.

About a month later he refereed to Weston A. Price and Dr. Mercola.

And that is how I got here.

****Welcome. I hope you enjoy the ride.

Bianca
