what makes us so judgemental and harsh is we do this 24/7. if it was occasional

id always be gushing with appreciation and patience with people. but its

constant stress and get sick of not being able to even pump gas or run in a

store to buy something without having to explain to every person that crosses

your path that you are deaf, yes you speak well because we were not born deaf,

no i really cant lip read that well yada yada yada .

Actually Marcus.. I think I do much of the same things.

I feel weirdly proud (rather than needing help) if I can accomplish a "transaction" with someone without admitting to them I'm deaf.

Normally in restaurants and stores I usually don't say I'm deaf unless they say something that I really can't figure out.

Most places follow a pattern -

(nice restaurant)

Drink? Meal? (look closely at menu to be ready if they ask you for any side dishes that come with the meal)

Everything ok? Dessert?

(fast food)

Order? Drink? Anything Else? Here or To go? The total is (look at cash register)

Now it always throws me if they add in some question like "Would you like Cheese?"

Othertimes right up front I'll say "I'm deaf" because I don't want someone to think I'm rude for ignoring them :)

ROFL!

Sometimes my mind will be wandering or something and I'll notice the cashier

looking at me expectantly and I'll go " Excuse me? " and I'll see them saying

" Do you want paper or plastic? " and I'll answer and think " Sheez, I should

know they are going to ask me that by now. "

I do that too, Marcus. Sometimes it just doesn't seem worth it to say "What was that? I'm deaf." One thing that stands out.. on an elevator, when ppl feel compelled to say something (about the weather or whatever). If I'm on an elevator with one person who I don't know, I'm likely not to look at them at all, for fear if I do, they'll say something to me and I'll have to go through the rigmarole telling them I'm deaf and trying to understand what they said, when most of the time it was something like "Nice weather we're having" or something like that and not worth holding up the elevator on.

You're absolutely right, Lois. I think you would have to be late-deafened

to understand our perspective. I was reading C's message and I don't think

she was actually offended that this guy was signing to her. Its just that

like she said, we want to blend in and not stick out like a sore thumb.

might make you feel more with out meaning to BUT! I 'm sure its very hard

for you I understand a little as When we would take Mike with us sometimes

we'd get a person really ignorant that would stare at his arm ... once I

wanted to punch a guy MYSELF I ask if he had a problem ... he got red in the

face he was curious that's all. Mike always said he'd rather some one just

ask instead of staring ... but Mike is patient I'm Irish ... smile Lois

Yeah, I hate to draw attention to myself that way too. I'm getting thicker

skin though, let 'em all look at me.

I draw concerned looks too when I cough. My mom says it sounds like I'm

dying of consumption (she's a depression child. ;) I can't hear myself

cough, so I just cough with abandon. Then people turn around in their

chairs and look at me (I cough when I eat.) That bugs me too, but I

understand they are just worried about having to do CPR on me. :)

I still will not tell but will tell DEPENDING on the situation. I am NOT inyo adverttising like with a tee shirt. Sometimes I feel I can have a neon sign and it wont make a difference. I am deaf so.......................... I am still normal and require the same respect as others do.

I always explain to the person that I'm deaf and I'm not being a jerk and ignoring them.. :-) I'm from Minnesota.. the people here go out of their way to say "HI Have a nice day" We are a very nice and talkative group of people.. I grew up being an extrovert.. and being deaf isn't going to stop me.. I always say "HI" to the stranger..

RE: Baffled M

I do that too, Marcus. Sometimes it just doesn't seem worth it to say "What was that? I'm deaf." One thing that stands out.. on an elevator, when ppl feel compelled to say something (about the weather or whatever). If I'm on an elevator with one person who I don't know, I'm likely not to look at them at all, for fear if I do, they'll say something to me and I'll have to go through the rigmarole telling them I'm deaf and trying to understand what they said, when most of the time it was something like "Nice weather we're having" or something like that and not worth holding up the elevator on.

I've wondered why I ( me M ) don't always tell everyone I meet that I'm deaf. Seems I might only tell certain types of people, and that I'm subconsciously selective.

I think I classify people into categories, like,,,,,,,,,,,,

1. Loud mouth idiots that couldn't handle the information in a humane manner anyhow.

2. Kind helpful people that will serve me better by knowing.

3. I cant be bothered telling them I just want to buy something fast and go . ( NEVER THAT EASY remember the old KIDS AT Mcs post ?)

4. I'm smarter than them anyway so just do what I say and don't ask questions OK ? grrrrrrrr

5. I'm feeling defeated and have given up.

Anyone got some ideas ?

Marcus

I always explain to the person that I'm deaf and I'm not being a jerk and ignoring them.. :-) I'm from Minnesota.. the people here go out of their way to say "HI Have a nice day" We are a very nice and talkative group of people.. I grew up being an extrovert.. and being deaf isn't going to stop me.. I always say "HI" to the stranger..
