Guest guest
Actually Marcus.. I think I do much of the same things. I feel weirdly proud (rather than needing help) if I can accomplish a "transaction" with someone without admitting to them I'm deaf. Normally in restaurants and stores I usually don't say I'm deaf unless they say something that I really can't figure out. Most places follow a pattern - (nice restaurant) Drink? Meal? (look closely at menu to be ready if they ask you for any side dishes that come with the meal) Everything ok? Dessert? (fast food) Order? Drink? Anything Else? Here or To go? The total is (look at cash register) Now it always throws me if they add in some question like "Would you like Cheese?" Othertimes right up front I'll say "I'm deaf" because I don't want someone to think I'm rude for ignoring them Pete -----Original Message-----From: Marcus Sent: Thursday, January 31, 2002 7:23 AMTo: NF2_Crew Subject: Baffled M I've wondered why I ( me M ) don't always tell everyone I meet that I'm deaf. Guest guest
ROFL! Guest guest
I do that too, Marcus. Sometimes it just doesn't seem worth it to say "What was that? I'm deaf." One thing that stands out.. on an elevator, when ppl feel compelled to say something (about the weather or whatever). If I'm on an elevator with one person who I don't know, I'm likely not to look at them at all, for fear if I do, they'll say something to me and I'll have to go through the rigmarole telling them I'm deaf and trying to understand what they said, when most of the time it was something like "Nice weather we're having" or something like that and not worth holding up the elevator on. na -----Original Message-----From: Marcus Sent: Thursday, January 31, 2002 6:23 AMTo: NF2_Crew Subject: Baffled M I've wondered why I ( me M ) don't always tell everyone I meet that I'm deaf. Guest guest
Yeah, I hate to draw attention to myself that way too. I'm getting thicker skin though, let 'em all look at me. I draw concerned looks too when I cough. My mom says it sounds like I'm dying of consumption (she's a depression child. I can't hear myself cough, so I just cough with abandon. Then people turn around in their chairs and look at me (I cough when I eat.) That bugs me too, but I understand they are just worried about having to do CPR on me. na Baffled M > > > > > > I've wondered why I ( me M ) don't always tell everyone I meet that I'm > > deaf. Seems I might only tell certain types of people, and that I'm subconsciously selective. I think I classify people into categories, like,,,,,,,,,,,, 1. Loud mouth idiots that couldn't handle the information in a humane manner anyhow. 2. Kind helpful people that will serve me better by knowing. 3. I cant be bothered telling them I just want to buy something fast and go . ( NEVER THAT EASY remember the old KIDS AT Mcs post ?) 4. I'm smarter than them anyway so just do what I say and don't ask questions OK ? grrrrrrrr 5. I'm feeling defeated and have given up. Anyone got some ideas ? Guest guest
I always explain to the person that I'm deaf and I'm not being a jerk and ignoring them.. :-) I'm from Minnesota.. the people here go out of their way to say "HI Have a nice day" We are a very nice and talkative group of people.. I grew up being an extrovert.. and being deaf isn't going to stop me.. I always say "HI" to the stranger.. STRANGERS DON'T WANT TO TALK TO ME IN ELEVATORS . I just count the floors like everyone else. I know exactly where your coming from . M RE: Baffled M I do that too, Marcus.
