Guest guest
I feel the same way ! I feel weirdly proud (rather than needing help) if I can accomplish a "transaction" with someone without admitting to them I'm deaf.
Guest guest
Pete, I'm 100% deaf and thought and Carol's posts were great! Jennette (who carries a pad and paper everywhere she goes and takes responsibility for herself... and yes, right off the bat tells folks she's deaf instead of wasting their time and mine, and creating frustration for all involved frying to pretend otherwise) ----- Original Message ----- from what I've seen from reading this emails it seems to be divided by the people who have some hearing saying " You need to educate, help them out.. " to the deaf people saying " Argggh! " and my own conclusion is, you can't really know whats it like until you've actually been there. In the meantime, it's good to vent and get these frustrations out Pete
Guest guest
True,. for me they probably think it is all perfectly normal. I just came out of an Arby's; I went in and asked the kid for an kArby's Jr., pointed to the sign that said they were 1$ and a jamocha shake. Well he mumbled something, so I had to say, I'm deaf. He mumbled it again. I said look, I just want one Arby's Jr and a small Jamocha shake. I figured what more did he need to know! So he says 2.40 and I pay him./ Then he gives me sanwich and no shake. I said what about the shake. He said, oh I forgot, that is another 1.50. I said wait a minute, I just paid you $2.40l, it said the sandwich was 1$. After more of his mumbling and my not understanding, the manager came over and pointed at the sign $1.49, and apparently if you only get 1 it is $1.49, the $1.00 is only if you get five! Well by that time I was so frustrated I said just forget the whole thing. and walked out. Only when I got in my car did I realize I had already paid $2.40 and left without anything!!! THIS is when I hate being deaf! Marie Re: Baffled M >That is because your Polish disability stands out more, Marie > RE: Baffled M >> >> >> >You're SOL if you wanna blend in, . Guest guest
See, you're POLISH ! hehe. I hate being at that in between stage. If I don't hear it after a couple of tries people just say forget it and leave me hangin, even family members, like we really don't count. Then if you push the issue it's my fault because I'm defective. RE: Baffled M > >> > >> > >> >You're SOL if you wanna blend in, . Guest guest
I agree with Mike, as much as I hated deafness I REALLY hated the in between stage, mainly because as someone else said, people expect you to be making all the effort and you can get bits and pieces but frustrated when you can't get everything. Now being totally deaf is no piece of cake either, still alot of people expect you to make all the concessions to communicate with them. I do get annoyed sometimes and try to explain it this way.. They (the people I interact with) probably only encountered one deaf person that day (me) or at least a small number, I on the other hand have to deal with deafness and the difficulty communication with every single person I encounter. And deep down, I think we all understand what we (deaf) have to do to live in this world with no hearing and we do it. But it's still extremely frustrating, and from what I've seen from reading this emails it seems to be divided by the people who have some hearing saying " You need to educate, help them out.. " to the deaf people saying " Argggh! " and my own conclusion is, you can't really know whats it like until you've actually been there. Guest guest
Here here, Pete! I know that most of us KNOW that the hearing people we deal with are not educated, they just don't KNOW what to do etc etc, but man oh man, the frustrations we have to deal with day after day when people don't have simple common sense... we NEED a place where we can go to vent and not have someone telling us we're wrong to feel the way we do. na PS I love you too, Carol. This has been an interesting topic! Re: Baffled M See, you're POLISH ! hehe. I hate being at that in between stage.
