Shiela,

I wouldn't blame on the antibiotic, she combination of the others too, You

need to call the your doctor, or look up on internet and see what the side

effects of these medicines are. It could be a number of things, like a herx,

as far as zoloft, check it see if it supressed the app. One of Lyme

Systems is no desire for food. Wierd isn't it, most people gain wieght, I

lose wieght even when I do eat good.

Call Dr. or Pharmacist., look on internet under health.

Sheila,

Why don't you go to Dr Koop's website to check for medicine interactions:

http://www.drugchecker.drkoop.com/apps/drugchecker/DrugMain?cob=drkoop

I tried to get in, but the server is down for the day. Try tomorrow.

Even quicker, call your pharmacist, if he can't help, call the doctor.

I had to take minocycline for a while. I couldn't keep

anything down either. I found that an RX for

Compazine(sp?), a drug that helps with nausea helped

me tremendously.

Yikes, poor kid, all of them can contribute! Taking them with food can help,

taking them closer to bedtime with a snack can help, you experience the

nausea less if you are asleep. Potato chips or other salty foods seem to help a

little as does the juice from fruit cocktail, a teaspoon at a time.

I think it is loaded with phosphorous and that has a settling effect. lots of

other things. If it persists, gotta make sure her liver is okay.

sometimes using zantac or pepcid or a similar agent also helps with the nausea

but definitely run it by her doctor. Sorry to hear its going so hard.

Thanks Bea,

Spoke to Dr. today and we decided to take her off of both

antibiotics for awhile. She has been taking zantac for a week and it

helps minimally. Next week we go to a pediatric gastroenterologist.

I am not optomistic, but what the heck. Thank you for your kind

thoughts and suggestions. We will try them.

Ann,

I have been on it for the past 2 months and I can't say anything for or

against it. I did have an issue with a sun reaction just like all the

tetracycline derivatives, Neutrogena SPF 45 sunscreen fixed that. But

otherwise it has been unremarkable. I take the Minocycline in addition to

Biaxin. I start Zithromax and Mepron for Babesia in another week and will be

stopping Biaxin but continuing the Minocycline. I had an allergic reaction

to doxy about 4 years ago but have tolerated the Mino quite well.

I'm about to start taking Minocycline. Anyone have experience with it?

Hi there - have you had the same problem?

I can hear a little bit better this morning. Maybe about a 3%

improvment - not sure if I am trying to be optimistic. From what I

read about this, it can take up to 6 months to restore hearing fully.

Thank you so much for your help. This is all very scary to me.

I had terrible dizzyness with the mino, I had to quit taking it. Others say it

gets better but it didn't for me. My two doc even said the mino had side

effects that were hard to handle for some. One of the doc tried mino himself

and had heard stories, well he got his own story after taking it. He had heard

of people having " frozen " spells with it, when he was taking it (not for lyme)

his hands were " frozen " on the steering wheel. He couldn't turn off the radio.

I had a " frozen " spell also when I was on it.

Mnocycline is major antibiotic used In Marshall Protocol

<http://www.marshallprotocol.com/> WWW.marshallprotocol.com

Doktor Marshall said in conference in Chicago that molecules of it are

to small to provoke antigens so this " side effects " cannot be allergy on

mino.

This are propably effects of herxheimer reaction ,caused by elevated

1,25 dihydroxyvitaminum D

I had frozen spells when having Lyme without any antibiotics.

Notice that not everybody has this reations. This people who had wasn`t

diagnosed for intracellular pathogens.

This disease cannot be beat without getting symptoms worse. Minocycline

is working on this bacteria very well and it takes time to get well

after getting bad.

Benicar - angiotensine receptor blocade and avoiding light helps to

force this uncomfort.

Like so many other treatments it's not effective for everyone. I recall one

man who sent a heartbreaking message regarding the permanent joint

destruction he experienced while waiting and waiting and waiting for the

minocycline

to work as he was advised to do. Seems like he gave it about a year before

going on to more conventional, better proven therapies that halted the

progression of his PA. There are online groups that focus on the use of

minocycline

in the treatment of PA/RA. By watching one of those groups over about a year

I would estimate that less than 10% of the people who came and went thought

that it did them any good. You would probably have better luck using nothing

but fish oil.

Minocycline is relatively safe in comparison to many of the treatments

prescribed for PA so it may not hurt any to give it a try but if you have

aggressive, destructive PA then dont waste time messing around with minocycline,

use

the more conventional treatments. Orin

The series of post you recall were mine. I was one Minocycline for 11

months because the other available treatments were ineffective and I could

not tolerate MTX. I sustained permanent joint damage in my hands when I

went into a severe flare. Luckily I was able to go on Enbrel even before it

was approved for PA which has been a miracle for me. My opinion is that

antibiotics can be effective for two reasons. 1) If you have misdiagnosed

reactive arthritis and 2) For the same reason Sulfasalazine (an antibiotic

also) does. Using antibiotics has a tendency to lower your immune response

except for the spectrum for bacteria for which they are effective. That's

why people die every year when they get a shot of Mexican Penicillin when

they have the flue.

There is a group of people out there that are like a cult that I was once

involved with at rheumatic.org. There is also the Antibiotic Protocol book.

These people can be useful in helping you live with the most of the GI

effects of being on Minocine long term. Be advised that over time

Minocyline will turn you grey starting with all of the scars on your body.

Also be aware that this treatment is a religion for these AP people. They

were furious that I got better using another treatment and banned me from

their board for reporting and discussing it. Minocycline does seem to work

for a few people but is statistically less effective than Sulfasalazine and

will really mess up your GI tract in the long run. Be very critical of

their suggestions of antibiotic cocktails and using other antibiotics in

concert with Minocine.

Their belief is that all rheumatic disease is caused by a mycoplasm

infection. Beware that there are some serious kooks in that organization.

They will tell you things like you must get worse before you get better and

are constantly touting a nonexistent Herxheimer effect. Beware of their

recommended doctors and clinics who will soak your insurance for thousands

of dollars for useless test and unnecessary x-rays. In my opinion the whole

thing is a scam.

Cheers

Ronnie

Thanks for recounting your story Ron. The Herxheimer part of their protocol

is what made me leery. Yes, trials have shown it to be effective for some

people but to suggest someone should sustain permanent damage while blindly

adhering to a protocol that is not working sounded like madness to me. Orin

Bev,

Have you been taking probiotics for yeast? Doctors won't tell you to

take this, you have to know or be informed by one of the support

groups online. This sounds like yeast to me. Jan

I myself have been on minocycline since 2005 as a result of articles

i read on this list. i went from the s Hopkins pilot study to

other materials, and convinced my doctor by pointing out the evident

virulence of my little mystery bug. i started on 100mg 2/day in 10/5,

switched to 50mg 2/day in early 07 based on my dermatologist telling

me that minocycline is known to eventually require less and less

dosing to maintain its peculiar anti-inflammatory effect, whihc is at

least as responsible as its antimicrobial properties when it comes to

its supposed ability to fight aids-dementia, parkinson's, alzheimer's

and huntington's disease...not sure if the same goes for its parp-1

inhibition, whihc is a major mode of its action in the brain/cns

i always had bad acne and in the last decade it was follwed by a

combo of rosacea and worsening dermatitus...even still, i would not

consider taking a daily pill just for that. i must be nuts, becuz now

that my face is clear (with alot more than just minocycline) i cant

imagine why i waited so long, and at least pretend i'm protecting my

brain with it as well.

as for improved memory, i feeling more intelligent than a few years

ago, but how to tease apart minocycline from improved general health,

exercise, fish oil, vinpocetine and a new engaghement with

intellectual pursuits? i just throw it all into the mix, and add a

strong probiotic supplement, n i'm happy.

now i have minocycline and 4 classes of ARVs at work on my bug, i'm

hoping that settles the matter a long while.

Your link

minomycin.html

was sent in response to a request for a source of minocycline without

a prescription.

The link leads to a source for one hundred 100 mg Minomycin capsules

for US $76.00. To the best of my knowledge, Minomycin is the name for

pelleted brand name Minocin as sold in Australia, New-Zealand, Japan,

and South Africa. The $76 price includes global airmail postage and

is about half of the lowest Canadian prices for brand name Minocin

made by Stiefel. This is most likely an excellent deal.

The link leads to a company named 4 Corners Pharmacy, located on Eluk

Road, Pango, Port Vila, Republic of Vanuatu. Vanuatu is an

archipelago of 83 islands lying between New Caledonia and Fiji in the

South Pacific. You may wish to check out the pharmacy in person

before purchasing there.

Harald,

Thanks for the great lead...and the humor. I got a nice chuckle out of it. Oh

that we all could meet on some tropical island and put faces to these names.

And GREAT news for ya, Sally! Glad you've found a good doc and have been able to

get out...even if it is just for medical appointments. It's a step! Amy

You're all on,   If you can get it together with others, renting the

beachfront view house is the way to go.  With enough people chipping in, it

could be a great retreat for people who would like to vacation together and get

to know each other.  We all have these illnesses and some of us have physical

limitations where a normal vacation would be uncomfortable.  A group like this

bunch would have lots to talk about and have great camraderie together.  Hope

you all can work it out.  Just let me know so I can get the tiki torches ready

for night swimming.  Dolores & Mike
