Guest guest
- >What are your thoughts? I voted " other " only because I think it could stay IF it can be backed up solidly (with references) but even then the statement would probably have to be modified, perhaps to state that " calves fed only pasteurized milk die within six months " . Assuming that's true it's a powerful statement, and I'd be reluctant to dispense with powerful, true statements just because they seem wrong, but it would certainly need to be rendered bulletproof. If the choices are leave the statement unmodified or yank it, though, my vote it on yank it. As it stands it impairs the credibility of the site. -

Guest guest
I also had voted " other " for essentially the same reasons that were presented by Suze Fisher. -/ Chef Jemichel __________________________________________________
Guest guest
- >Just to continue the discussion, I would only feel comfortable if it >were removed or changed to " many [sustainable] farmers have noticed >that calves fed pasteurized milk do not grow up as big and healthy as >calves fed raw milk " . Even if there we could produce a cite for the >current version, it would contradict the day to day hands on >experience of thousands of dairymen and women across the country. It >will trigger their " fringe group/animal rights BS " meter. How many >times have these guys been confronted with evidence from animal >rights activists that they know is BS and written them off as >idealistic city folks that don't a damn thing about how farming >really works? The thing is, though, is ANYONE feeding calves a diet of just pasteurized milk? Milk replacers have all sorts of other ingredients and fortifications, perhaps because they're cheap fillers to round out the milk derivatives they include, perhaps because the milk derivatives they include, being processed, simply aren't adequate for calf nutrition. If (if) it's true that calves fed only pasteurized milk die, then it doesn't necessarily clash at all with farmers' experiences. The other question I have, though, is whether calves in the wild go their first six months consuming only milk. I've read (and I think it's been posted here) that calves fed pasteurized milk and supplemented with grain, grass, hay, etc., survive. If calves in the wild are eating solid food during their first few months, then a calf fed exclusively milk of any kind during the first six months isn't entirely meaningful. -
