Hello,

I read your message and was intrigued by your symptoms after stopping HC. I just

posted a long message detailing the same thing.

I started tapering my HC a few months ago after I suspected that my cortisol

levels were too high - this was then confirmed by salivary tests (I was high in

all 4 times). So after tapering about 2mg/10-12 days and feeling less panicky

with each reduction, I then finished completely last week. Well for the last

week I have felt horrid - bad pressure headache at the base of my head/neck,

dizziness, a sense of 'heaviness' down my right side, weird anxiety that makes

me want to cry...just not normal at all.

Is this what you have been experiencing? Out of interest, do you have any issues

with RT3?

I tapered off of the HC but I think I may need to go back on. I tapered 2.5 mg.

every week and once I stopped I started to feel like crap. Not tired or

anything. Like I'm going through withdrawl. Head squeezing symptoms, anxiety,

just an overall wierd feeling. Could this mean I need to go on some HC for a

bit? If so, how much? I don't have any pills so what about the cream?

Are you right off yet??

if you've been off for 2 weeks then it's time to get a saliva test

done.

In the mean time start charting those temperatures as per the first

link on this page

Mel, thanks for your reply. My taper was going fine until after I was off and

then what your describing is how I feel. I feel like my body is in some kind of

withdrawl state. The only way I would know that is because I know what it's

like to withdraw from a substance. I've tried to withdraw from paxil on a few

occasions. Also, years ago I was on Zanax and between doses, I would go into a

kind of withdrawl and that's what this feels like. Yes, I do or did have an RT3

issue but I just was overwhelmed with all the dosing of HC and thyroid and temp

taking etc. I started to feel worse than what I did when I started so I threw

in the towel so to speak. I just want to know if I should go back on some HC

and taper even more slowly.

Thanks,

I am getting these symptoms too from just going from 55 to 47.5 mg of HC. I

think now that I am tapering too quickly. It feels just awful.

That's interesting because I've always thought that coming off HC feels like

benzo withdrawal, too. In fact, I've used small doses of benzos for a short

period (1 week or so) to get through HC withdrawal when coming off of too high

doses.

If you are totally off, could you not do a salvia test to see how your adrenals

are doing? If it is withdrawal symptoms of sorts (and I think it's totally

possible that the body just gets USED to having the higher amount of cortisol,

whether you need it or not), then maybe taking a BIT of benzo to ease those

symptoms will help. I only had to do that about 1 week to get through and that's

not long enough to get addicted to benzos.

And I hear ya on being overwhelmed with all the temp taking and dosing. I am

running around with a thermometer constantly in my mouth, tryng to see what

every single dose does. I don't think we're supposed to get obsessed like that,

but it's hard when you feel worse than when you started!

Val, Thanks. How much should I go back on? I only have cream so a 1/4 tsp. of

cream is equal to 10mg. of HC correct?

Thanks so much!

Kathleen,

K feel better just hearing from you. I just knew something was wrong. I just

didn't know you could feel like that from HC withdrawl. Now I've got my

husband's nasty cold and have already gone up on the HC. Oh and by the way, I

wouldn't feel those symptoms until about mid day. Like something was wearing

off and it was probably my body not having enough HC. Not making enough or

whatever. Crazy huh?

Anyway, good luck to you all.

I feel so much better reading both of your posts! The awful part was I phoned my

doc 2 days ago to ask if these symptoms were normal after ceasing all HC and she

said no, which only made me more scared that I was about to have a stroke or had

MS or something (my sis kept reminding me that that was anxiety talking!).

Hearing from people who actually experienced it means so much to me.

Today will be day 7 off HC...yesterday was another roller coaster of anxiety and

weird physical symptoms (when I laid down, it felt like a 'wave' of pressure was

going over my head every couple of minutes?).

I'm just taking paracetamol every few hours...funny you talk about Benzo's...I

just said to my sis last night that I wish I had some valium (and I've only ever

taken that to help me sleep on a long haul flight!).

Thank you both so much again. (I hope you don't mind if I check in with either

of you again?...) :)

I use my temps and BP to tell if it's truly low cortisol or just anxiety from

withdrawal. Benzos are not going to raise your BP or your temps, so if the benzo

helps with the symptoms of decreasing, I do think it's withdrawal. Cushing

patients have a h*ll of a time coming down from high cortisol and it's not

because they had low cortisol but because their bodies got USED to all that

cortisol.
