Hi

Well your ratio is always going to look good after taking some cytomel along with naturethroid for 6 weeks. Now say that you only stayed on naturethroid and your free t3 level was 6. Well the ratio would be 18. But because you have been on your t3 your reverse t3 level would of come down. So you could a ratio problem but taking t3 has masked it. have you done any previous rt3 tests.

Have checked adrenals and ferritin level?

If there both ok maybe you should try t3 only. It can't hurt.

I was curious if RT3 has been contributing to my brain fog. I've been on desicated thyroid for about 5 years, and my temps have been mid-98's for a few years now. The only thing that has really been lingering was the brain fog. When I had the labs done, I had been on 3 grains Nature-throid + 25mcg of cytomel per day for 6 weeks:Free T3 - 7.1 (2.3-4.2)Free T4 - 1.32 (.67-1.76)RT3 - 307 (the range went up to 350)Going by the ratios given here, FT3:RT3 ratio should be at least 20.(7.1 x 1000) /307 ~ 23Is this ok?Of note, I had not taken any thyroid meds within 12 hours and oddly enough, on 4 grains of Nature-throid w/o cytomel, my FT3 runs around 6.0

i am wondering though....if she continues to take the combination of NT and T3 will that RT3 eventually clear assuming the RT3 was caused by another condition that has now been fixed (i.e. cortisol, ferritin etc)

i am asking cause my daughter is doing this also..she is currently on 2 grains NT and 15mcg of T3....she is feeling good....her doctor wants to do a repeat RT3 but will this tell us anything of value?? our plan was to see if she felt better with the combo instead of necessarily eliminating all the NT....and she does feel better...her ratio before doing this sat at about 13 or 14....so if ratio has improved in a few weeks is that valid??

I am no expert when it comes to these things. But I just do not see how you would get clearance if you are only taking 15mcg of t3. That is just not enough to supress to t4 and that is the aim of the whole protocol. of course she is going to feel better because she is getting straight t3. Are her pulses and temps where they should be.

Her ratio should have improved even if by a little bit. My sisters ratio went from 7.5 to 23 in 2 weeks but she was taking straight t3. The rt3 test is usually a waste but in your daughters case it would do no harm to get it tested.
