Guest guest
HI, My name is Mike. I am 30 years old, and have been suffering from persistent complicated migraines and autonomic dysfunction for the past several years (actually, probably longer than that, but it only becamse really bad recently). When I was 14, I suffered a hemipeligic migraine attack, and these kind of attacks run on my mothers side of the family. While I have been tentatviely diagnosed with a rare disease known as mastocytosis (a disease where too many allergy cells are created), treatment for this disorder has not improved my condition, and the diagnosis is being seriously questioned for other reasons as well. The neurologists are now looking deeper and are investigating mitochondrial disease. I recently did a lactate/pyruvate test at rest and after running up 10 or so flights of stairs (which nearly killed me, Wow, that was tough). Here are the results: AT REST: LACTATE 1.00 normal=0.60-2.40 mmol/L PYRUCATE 0.09 normal=0.03-0.10 mmol/L LACTATE/PYRUVATE 11 normal=10-20 AFTER 10 FLIGHTS OF STAIRS: LACTATE 8.93 normal=0.60-2.40 mmol/L PYRUCATE 0.36 normal=0.03-0.10 mmol/L LACTATE/PYRUVATE 25 normal=10-20 At first glance, when I saw the resting lactate/pyruvate levels, I felt reassured, becasue they looked normal, but my neurologist feels that the results are abnormal and wants me to see a metabolic disease specialist. I don't know what to think. Will seeing a metabolic disease guy be barking up the wrong tree, or are these labs truly suggestive of something amiss in terms of a mitochondrial disorder? I defer to your expertise. I am not looking for medical advice, I just want to know if these numbers will be taken seriously by the mittochondrial disease expert, or expect to be told that the labs are fine. Your assistance is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Mike
