Hi All,

Sorry I've been out of the lists for a while, but I had a very busy,

but lovely summer in Mexico and am back in school, so have had little

time to write.

Anyway, I'm doing much better again. My skin seems to have healed, a

combination of stress-free months of vacation, good eating, exercise

habits, but two things which I think also helped were stopping birth

control pills and these chinese medicine pills I took called Skin

Balance Formula (Dr. Fungs). You have to get them through a homeophath

or another natural health provider, because the company doesn't supply

to individuals. Last week, I was a bit inflamed, but I think it

usually happens right before my period. Luckily, it went away pretty

quickly, and I'm confident that I will have some pain free months.

It is still frustrating to not know what triggers my inflammations, but

it's also good to know they eventually go away.

I think we should trust our bodies, more than our doctors. To me

that's been key to keeping sane, hopeful and not falling into a cycle

of depression.

I also have a question, it's about the new HPV vaccine. Has anyone

gotten it? I'm considering it, but I'm afraid it might have some

unknown side effects that could cause V issues. Well, if anyone has

had experience with this, all advice is appreciated.

cheers,

mara

HI Mara, welcome back hon.... glad it was a wonderful time in Mexico for you and that you're feeling better. ;)

About the HPV vaccine? My $.02 cents here. ;)

From what I understand it may not benefit those of us who are already infected with it...there is still some uncertainty about that tho as it's thought that we carry that virus for life much like a herpes virus but usually remains dormant and under control.

Some statistics I've seen say that approx 80% of the sexually active population carries one or more strains of the almost 200 types of DNA, though some articles say 100 types but I've seen others that high.

So I think it will be given most likely to preadolescents 'before' they have sex just as they do the measles, chicken pox etc to prevent it down the road. But there is a lot of controversy about that as well right now going on with some. (parents usually) feeling that it might promote sex and some are quite adverse to it.

Dr. Jack Sobel which some of you may know, (writes many articles about yeast) had this to say to Medscape about that:

''Jack Sobel, MD, a professor of medicine and chief of infectious diseases at Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit, agreed that this is a major issue being raised. “It is beyond belief that there has been public opposition to and protesting against a vaccine that will save lives,” he told Medscape. “The concern of increased promiscuity is incomprehensible.”

It will cover the 2 main strains or types of HPV for cervical cancer types 16 & 18...( which account for the majority) and the two wart varities types 6 & 11, of those 200 or so strains.

And types 6 & 11(wart variety) are not generally considered precancerous or extremely rare, and are a very low risk variety. Personally if I had a wart I wouldnt worry, unless it were exceptionally large like a cauliflower one and constantly being irritated or in the way of sex.

The reported effectiveness of the vaccine after an average follow-up of 17 months was 100% in one study I saw but keep in mind that HPV often reverses on it's own without detriment to the self as well... according to an article about HPV in the British Medical Journal and most others I've seen as well. Here's a quote from the BMJ:

''Cervical cancer is a relatively rare consequence of HPV infection and most HPV infections resolve spontaneously.''

Which I've found to be true in most cases given enough time because we simply build up our own inate immunity to the various strains over time again in most cases, but I'd definitely keep an eye on those Paps and not miss an appointment esp. if I had a high Pap reading.

More than 50% that do end up in a cancerous condition are those patients who've rarely or never had a Pap where it would have been caught sooner and treated & prevented.

The vaccine they say has remained effective for up to 4 yrs after a three dose series, (another later study said up to 10 yrs, it may be a booster shot at 4 yrs.) and it ''appears'' to be safe but I did see mention that it has an aluminum adjuvant and if any of the people in the study were allergic to that they were eliminated. (adjuvant means in addition to the virus like particle in the vaccine) and estimated costs are approx $300 - $500 for the 3 shots required from what I understand so it might be cost prohibitive as well (not sure if insurance will pick that up or not).

I guess bottom line is up to the person but I tend to be more cautious with new drugs and vaccines till down the road myself as long as my own body keeps it under control. ;) Dee~
