Guest guest
Hi Kathy, We've tried various suggestions over the many years this group has been running. We just don't have the effort to constantly watch and moderate new people. It's also easy for a spammer to send " I would like to discuss rheumatic illness " after reading our group name, we would approve them and still get the spam. As Ethel said, there is nothing to stop them changing their email address and doing it all again. Given that this group only gets a few spammers each month (admittedly this week has been a bad one it shouldn't be too much to ask people just to hit 'delete'. I'm glad that method has worked for you on your groups though. We appreciate the suggestion. Chris. Hi, to keep this stuff out on my own lists I have people write something about themselves when they join telling me why they want to join the list. the spammers write stuff like " I want to join your beautiful group " and then i wont approve them. this does take approving each person. so far ive been able to keep the spammers at bay. kathy (ps I dont moderate the messages, only who joins)
Guest guest
Thanks for your previous reply regarding my concern about accidentally blocking the whole group when I only want to block one person with the spam button. Hitting delete isnt that bad, what my concern is those spammers that may spread viruses when we open their email. We are sick enough as it is, we don't need our computers sick also.... Guest guest
Kathy, we appreciate your time screening new people because it no doubt keeps so many spammers out of the way. As far as messages go, I think that if the messages had to be approved it would be so time consuming for a modetator and then the people would have to wait a while to see their messages. So that ideally wont ever change, even though there will be a risk of spammers, the benefits still outweigh the risks. Guest guest
Hi Vicki, groups has a spam blocker. If thinks a message has a virus it marks it as such as and sends the moderators a message to approve or disapprove. We do this several times a week. Spammers usually want to sell something (as in the case this week, religion, sex, something or other) so that is their purpose in sending the messages, which unfortunately doesn't trigger off the filters as it looks like normal email. I know the volume of junk mail in my private inbox has hugely increased over the last year. Sad that a great facility like the net is spoiled by people who seem to have little else to do. Not sure we can do much more about the problem. Hope this helps, Chris. > Thanks for your previous reply regarding my concern about accidentally blocking the whole group when I only want to block one person with the spam button. > Â > Hitting delete isnt that bad, what my concern is those spammers that may spread viruses when we open their email. Guest guest
Thanks that makes sense. You guys do such a great job. If these spammers were half as sick as us we wouldn't be dealing with their B.S. Guest guest
Also worth remembering that reading an email message doesn't transfer a virus to your computer. Viruses are transmitted in attachments. If you never open an attachment unless you know the person, then you won't risk getting a virus on your machine. On this group we have disallowed attachments specifically for that reason. Chris. Vicki writes: > Thanks that makes sense.
