Guest guest
Hi Lynne, You wrote: this ERP sounds great. Is there anyway I can help her with this on our own at home? Is this what the book " How I Ran OCD Off My Land " is about? Yes, the book tells you how to go about it. You can do this at home but be careful not to burn out. I very nearly did. My 7 yo. daughter is extraordinarily shy (and rather immature). I'm convinced we'd still be battling OCD in a major way if I had let her do an occasional exposure in the therapist's office. Instead, I used these weekly sessions with him to vent and get input and suggestions and then did it with her every day at home. It's tough to be your child's mom and therapist though, but sometimes you do what you gotta do. If you think you could get her to open up with you, I say go for it. Stay in touch with the therapist and keep a door open in case you find you can hand her off to him/her as she has some success. Good luck, in San Diego
Guest guest
Hi Lynne, Plase don't underestimate the important work you are doing with your son to set a good foundation for CBT. I found that our family dynamic really shifted when we stopped fighting each other and began to talk about the OCD as something separate from Kelsey. He is doing important work, just bring his OCD into more awareness, even if he won't admit that's what his symptoms are. You're being a huge help by noticing without judgement. I think an increasing awareness is key to being willing to learn how to boss it back. So kudos to you on biting your tongue about the non-dangers of paint fumes! Take care, in San Diego
Guest guest
Everyone's suggestions today were so helpful and with each response I learn a bit more about this ERP therapy. Of course I still have a million questions but at least I don't feel totally lost out here. Everyone today mentioned taking these small steps to get Kim back to school and although I understand the theory now, I am not sure about her specific needs. Although she is very anxious about going to school , as soon as I tell her she doesn't have to go and I am not forcing her or punishing her for this, she calms down and is basically fine all day long. Even if I take her to the school to sit out front this isn't really much anxiety for her because she knows she doesn't have to go in. The only negative response I get is if I talk about when she does go back and about having to make some decisions soon about home schooling or not. She keeps saying she wants to go back so I have hesitated getting the school involved with the permissions I will need for at home tutoring. Last year they were very accommodation but I don't want to ask until I am sure. She has barely been successful in these past 2 weeks and maybe it is a fantasy for her or me to expect that anything will change yet. Her only real fear at this time is vomiting, but it is very intense and this isn't something I can easily remove or promise that it will never happen (although if i do promise it doesn't matter, cause the OCD tells her its going to happen anyway). I mentioned earlier about her embarrassment in going back after missing so much school. Even my suggestions of making this easier for her but attending fewer hours..even one hour is a problem to her cause she doesn't know what to tell the kids. I, as Kathy had suggested, told her that it is ok to tell the kids whats going on and she was able to tell one friend, who isn't in school with her. She doesn't want to tell the kids in her class and we haven't come up with a good enough " lie " for her. Ok, I know I am getting repetitive now in my own questions...I guess i just need to vent...thanks
Guest guest
Hi Leonie,do you have a list of foods you can't have? I will cook something up for you....pardon the pun.Foods can get very boring for us so I use a lot of spices to give them a kick or I just will have an apple and an avocado for a meal.I am really, really busy for a few days. Our first orchid show of the season is the weekend of the 9th and every plant has to be washed down, shines, tagged and ready for the judges, then there are a couple hundred that will be for sale but I don't put quite so much effort into them.Just to add to the misery we have an order coming in from the ines that has been nothing but trouble so I have spent the last 2 days on the phone with customs, the air freight people, the broker etc, etc.Have not hav more that 6 hours of sleep a night for the last couple of weeks ans am beginning to feel myself backsliding.Oh la la I want my bed. Guest guest
Hi Amy, A lot of people with gluten intolorance and celiac are sensitive to dairy also and a good proportion of them can't have beef either.Alas I am one of them. There are times when I could sell my soul for a good fat hamburger but have to settle for gluten free buns and chicken patties.I really dress them up and they taste preety good. Guest guest
Hi Lynne, I don't know for sure what is in, or what is out re foods. I think grains and dairy and sugar are the biggest culprits, and that seems to include rice even tho i didn't realise it till recently. I eat grain alternatives like buckwheat and amaranth, but not sure if those are good or not - i found out buckwheat is quite allergenic. It seems the more i read and find out about different philosophies, the more limited my diet becomes. I went to a " clinical ecologist " recently who advised me that all vegetables are bad and i was to eat only meat and eggs, which i know are terrible for me. So that just about ruled out the last skerrick of food i can eat.... i suppose i'll just have to be one of those people who lives on fresh air haha! It would be interesting if you could give me some recipes contained in the exact same diet you have. Your recipes sound interesting and yummy. What do you eat for breakfast ? I hope your orchid show goes well... it sounds like there's a lot of work to do. Do you have a website about them ? Best, leonie Re: rheumatic Vit. Guest guest
Hi Leonie and group, Your email is so right on for me at this time. Just this week I started feeling the same way. What can I eat? I am blood group A so most proteins are out which leaves a little fish or chicken. If I look at some theories I can only eat certain fishes and salmon isn't one. No wheat but does that include sprouted wheat? Depends on who you read. Fruits are OK - except those that slow thyroid productive (peaches, pears) or aren't digestible (oranges, bananas). Supposedly apples are OK but not daily. Nuts and seeds - gotta be careful of those because their oils are not easily digestible. Vegetables are OK - except those that slow thyroid production (broccoli, asparagus, spinach). So from a very limited selection of foods I need to eat five times a day and only eat a food once every four days (rotation diet which really works best for me). And they wonder why I've lost my mind! AARRGGHH Any thing any one can suggest (besides shoot myself) re foods would be greatly appreciated. Guest guest
I am glad you still find humor in your food situation. I just started on my gluten-free diet and trying to find out what food is the best. Thanks to the Whole Food Market here in Houston there is a large variety of things to be had. Keep up your spirit. Guest guest
If you are looking at breads, cereals, etc ... as far as I can tell, Amazon.com has the best prices. About half the price of Whole Foods. Also, there is no shipping cost if you use an Amazon card. Fortunately, the bread has a long shelf life - so I can keep it on hand. I buy the Ener-G bread but prefer the light version. It's 45 calories per slice. I prefer that because the light bread is less dense than the regular bread. I'm not saying it's the best tasting bread though - it's just what I prefer. Either way, I think toasting helps to soften a bit. Guest guest
Hi Leonie; At long last I am getting back to you.I am just so frigging busy right now and am putting in 18 hour days getting the greenhouse cleaned up fot the new orders of orchids that are coming in over the course of the next 2 weeks and don't even mention the show we are going to next week.I am so tired that I could fall flat on my face right now and every plants that is going to be judged by the American Orchid Society has to be staked, repotted into new bark, leaves polished, name tags written in gold lettering on a black card...and on ...and on.Then there are all the plants for sale that have to be groomed also.OUFFFFF! At least I am having a good laugh at the recent postings about food and wanting to shoot yourselves. hehehe.Personally I don't believe all the hype about eating for your blood type and all the B.S. the naturopaths give out. Most of these people will try to sell you their expensive supplements because you will be lacking in nutrients.Fresh, local, organic produce is always better but in general the foods produced in North America are very safe and things from Europe are super safe because they have much tighter laws when it comes to food.It is a good idea to find out if you have food sensitivities that can exacerbate one's disease because the immune system is busy fighting these problems and can't fight the disease.Mind you,if anyone is on any immune suppressing med it is even harder for the old immune system to do anything. If you are unable to get a proper testing just drop the foods that most people have sensitivities to such as grains, dairy and sugar, artificial sweeteners that are even worse and colourings used in prepared foods. The sugar in fruit is not bad as it is fructose, not sucrose and the body does not generally have a problem with it.Just don't overdo it.For breakfast I usually have a couple of slices of gluten free raisin bread, yogurt with unsweetened cherries.I buy those in the summer by the gallon and freese in containers.Fotr lunch I have a piece of chicken,an avocado,an apple and a hunk of goat cheese or Havarti. The enzymes used to make Havarti make it o.k. to eat but don't overdo it.For supper I will do an Indian,Thai or Chinese most of the time because I love the taste.Rice and rice noodles are fine and that is why that is usually a baby's first food. Have you ever had one of those great Thai Soups that is a meal in itself? Put 2 cups of water per person to heat or chicken broth if you have any.Add some curry powder, salt and hot pepper paste and maybe some chopped lemon grass to taste.Meantime heat up some rice noodles, the fine ones take about 4 minutes on a slow simmer, the thick ones take 10 min. more or less. When ready strain them and put aside. Now go back to the broth and bring it to a boil, add sliced onion, mushrooms, bok choi, brocoli, shrimp, finely sliced chicken, bean sprouts. The minute it comes to a boil take it off the heat.Put your noodles in a soup bowl and add broth mixture and garnish with a good dose of cilanthro and a dask of sesame oil. OUU LA LA,que c'est bon!Remember, you want the veggies semi crunchy. The chicken is done the minute it turns white This is recepie no.1 and I will send an other tomorrowI love peppers ,potatoesand tomatoes but they cause me a lot of problems so I limit them to once a week.Remember that food sensitivities go away once the gut heals so bear with a sensible diet until then.Leonie, did I send you that loooong article on food sensitivities, yeast and leaky gut? I sent it to so many that I can't remember who. XXXX Lynne leonie cent wrote: > Hi Lynne, > > I don't know for sure what is in, or what is out re foods. Guest guest
Hey Lynne, One of the reasons I'm trying the Diflucan is to rule out or eliminate leaky gut. I don't think I have one but what do I know. I'm willing to try the med for 15 days to see if there's a difference. I'm also looking into the blood tests for allergies from US Bio Tek. I need to contact them to find out the process. I used to get the /Act test for food sensitivities and it really helped me a lot. I would have never known those foods were causing me so much fatigue! Once I eliminated them my energy soared. Of course that didn't last because the foods I changed to were now the problem; however, instead of having 54 reactions, I went down to 37, then 20 something, and finally down to seven foods/substances. So it worked for me. I just need to do it more often and Bio Tek may be how I can do that. Thanks for the food info; it helps. Breakfast is the hardest meal for me. I'd love to have eggs and turkey bacon or soy sausage everyday but alas have to rotate. Your info really helps with that. I love the soup too! Thanks much. El _____ From: rheumatic [mailto:rheumatic ] On Behalf Of lynneandsantos Sent: Saturday, February 02, 2008 8:56 PM rheumatic Subject: Re: rheumatic To LYNNE Hi Leonie; At long last I am getting back to you.I am just so frigging busy right now and am putting in 18 hour days getting the greenhouse cleaned up fot the new orders of orchids that are coming in over the course of the next 2 weeks and don't even mention the show we are going to next week.I am so tired that I could fall flat on my face right now and every plants that is going to be judged by the American Orchid Society has to be staked, repotted into new bark, leaves polished, name tags written in gold lettering on a black card...and on ...and on.Then there are all the plants for sale that have to be groomed also.OUFFFFF! I just asked Leonie the same question as I can't remember to whom I sent it.Those articles would totally explain the problem By the way, stay away from any soy product that is not fermented as it is not good for us at all.I have info somewhere explaining that also. Guest guest
Hi Lynne, I think I recall getting an article about leaky gut; not sure if it was yours, but I'll look through my saved posts to see if I can find it. I think I've saved most of the email traffic. I keep thinking I'll go through them and delete the ones I don't want but I never seem to get to it. I can so relate to Dr. Crooks book, the Yeast Connection. It was like he was writing about my life. I was on antibiotics from infancy through my twenties. When I eliminated dairy my sinus infections disappeared and I did not use antibiotics at all until the Lyme's and AP. The yeast damage from my youth though stayed with me until my mid thirties when I learned about probiotics. I also did a round of Nystatin decades ago and it helped. I think I'm OK but I don't really know. I know soy is something to avoid but unfortunately it is in a lot of products. I've made an effort lately to be more aware of it although I do indulge now and then (soy sausage for example; I doubt it's fermented.) I really would like to be able to use soy and eliminate all meat but it seems like everything I think I can do to get to a vegan/vegetarian 'state' is foiled! I just read somewhere that I should avoid dried beans! My Dr. says avoid carbs. It's a good thing I like water; spring, bottled, or mineral so at least there's some variety. LOL I'll look through the posts I have to see if I can find the article on leaky gut.
