Guest guest
Thanks so much Val. I appreciate you more than you know. I am going to get my aldosterone checked on Fri.. I was thinking about doing the B12 and folate. How long do I have to be off B12 and folate to take those tests. I hope your day is not too busy. Thanks Ellen
Guest guest
From my understanding taking B12 and folate will throw off the more sensitive tests - urine MMA and homocysteine for a VERY long time and may not be worth spending your $ on. > > Thanks so much Val. Guest guest
Ellen, What do you want to find out by taking a B12 test? If you want to find out if you have the genetic predisposition to not convert B12 from food into a usable form, you can test for that directly. I forget the name of the test(s), but you could ask the lab or your doctor. The more problem you have utilizing food sources of B12, the faster your serum level will fall after you stop supplimenting. Stopping B12 suppliments in order to test serum levels isn't an efficient way to find out whatever you want to know. Do you have a recent CBC (complete blood count)? If so, post the MCV with ranges. I don't know much about folate testing. > > > > > > Thanks so much Val. I appreciate you more than you know. > > > > > > I am going to get my aldosterone checked on Fri.. Guest guest
Hi Ellen, It is important. And I am assuming your are wanting to know if you are deficient in it now. Measuring cellular deficiency is hard to do by labs once you've started supplementing. By stopping supps for a period and testing, you are looking at how well your body utilizes it from food sources a little more than looking at your cellular supply. If you are a meat eater, and you wanted to know how well you utilize, you'd stop for several months and retest. If you want to get an idea of your B12 status, get a complete blood count and look at the MCV. If high, you are almost certainly B12 deficient and have been for some time. Look for anything above 96. Otherwise, just get a good multi B vitamin like Jarrow's B-Right and take it every day knowing you are getting your Bs. If you are still concerned about B12 and folate, here's a terrific forum for B12 deficiency: http://forums.wrongdiagnosis.com/showthread.php?t=9948 & page=1305 Pam
