Guest guest
when I read the subject I thought " no way, these are animals that don't even know when they're dead! " , but now I kind of want a pet chicken!
Guest guest
Chickens are great. We just lost our survivor Henny Penny of two predator massacres that took all our turkeys, capons, peafowl and other chickens in two raids a few years back. She was a Partridge Rock/Silvar Laced Wyandotte cross. The only chick that was born here and survived. She'd come to the back deck when she wanted to be fed, would disappear for days and reappear. When our youngest was in kindergarten we had a dozen turkeys. They were in a semi circle off the front of the barn. Every day as she got off the bus she had to run the turkeys before coming to the house. She'd go back and forth on the outside and all would follow her as long as she did it. Wanted to send it into home videos as recipe for low fat turkey. :-) The turkeys would follow us around the yard when out and answer my gobbles. Had guinea hens too. Every night onewould fly to the barn peak call buckwheat, all others would come, join in and then they'd all go in for the night. They're not as people oriented but great for taking care of ticks as they forage more in the woods. My Dad said he saw a guinea hen attack a hawk coming in for a chicken at his Grandmother's. Another plus that is true but I never realized until they were gone is you'll never see a snake as long as you've got guinea hens. Guest guest
Okay, I want to tell just one chicken story. We have a pair of Buff Brahma Bantams. My husband digs up grubs for them several times a week. When he throws the grub over to them, the rooster runs over to the grub, points it out to his hen and lets her eat her fill of grubs before he eats any. No kidding.
