Guest guest
Cooky, I have Medicare part D. Is that the part you call " the medicine part of my insurance company? " I'll also call Walgreens back & ask to speak to a manager. I'll have to be more assertive. I had one round of IV done seven years ago when an in-town doctor was willing to do it. He moved years ago. We used a heparin lock, which the nurse flushed each day at IV time, but I didn't have to flush at home. I hope to do that again. I'll ask about the kind of saline. Contact your medicine part of your insurance company and tell them about your prescription and ask if they could have it sent to you. Sometimes I picked it up at the pharmacy and sometimes they delivered depended on the insurance at the time. You could also ask if they could special order it from Walgreens. They really hate to lose a sale. I got mine at Rite Aid and they had no problem special ordering it. How are you getting the Normal saline to put the medicine in? Don't use dextrose..you don't need the extra sugar. I also used Ringers Lactate. My doc ordered it for me and I bot it from his office. Very important that you do not infuse it fast. It should take at least an hour. I used butterfly needles and restarted the IV each time. Less painful with Butterfly needles. Cooky From: rheumatic@grou ps.com [mailto:rheumatic@grou ps.com] On Behalf Of Sent: Monday, March 23, 2009 11:16 PM rheumatic@grou ps.com Subject: rheumatic IV Clindamycin I have begun Minocin and have a prescription for IV clindamycin for longstanding (20 yrs) RA. I live in a small town and must drive to a nearby town to have the IV administered; however, an RN friend has agreed to administer the IV for me in my home. Unfortunately, neither my local pharmacy nor Walgreens pharmacy can provide IV clindy--only oral. Has anyone had IV antibiotics administered outside of a hospital or doctor's office environment? Do you have any suggestions? I have three children in 6th grade, 5th grade and preschool. While it could be done, traveling for the IV would be very inconvenient. Thanks, S. Guest guest
Yes that's the medicine part but who do you have it with? I have Humana. I would call their number on my med card and ask them how I can get this delivered. Heparin lock works great but then you need the doc to order the heparin also. Did you just push the med in the heparin lock or did you hook it up to a bag of fluid with the clindy in it? Sometimes alternative doctors do IV's in their offices and if your doc doesn't order the supplies for you maybe ask a pharmacist if they know of anyone nearby who does IV's in their offices (pharms know everythingJ) and ask if they will sell you the supplies. I have a friend that is a vet and they do operations in their offices. I don't know if they will sell you supplies but if all else fails you could get your RN friend to ask.
