Kim, they generally do a spinal tap for several reasons to look for infection, inflammation, and other type of CSF fluid related illnesses. They will generally do a CT first to rule out hydrocephalus as it makes it dangerous to perform a spinal tap if you have hydrocephalus. A shunt is a small tube which runs from generally the source of increased spinal fluid to the peritoneum but some shunts used to run to the area around the heart from what I have been told, then there are shunt made for dialysis but that is for a whole different purpose. That is about the extent of my knowledge but generally these are some of the reasons I know for spinal taps, but in my case they have also drained excess fluid from my back when my shunts were not working to their fullest extent. Take care, I hope that helps answer some of your questions. Your friendly Texan, Jeanna

Hi there, I am not sure I am the one to ask this question, I have had so many spinal taps that I am not sure I can even count them all the first ones were pretty stressful because all I had in the past medically was routine stuff like 2 pregnancy's, tubaligaton, and stuff like that, but you generally have to be bent in a fetal position unless they do it under fluoroscopy which I highly recommend even if the doctor thinks he is wonderful at doing them as this helps them see the space right off and there is no misses. They used to have me lay flat for a full 12 hours after but I have had so many like I said, they have performed one and I have left the hospital an hour after and just told to take it easy at home and call if have any problems as I pretty well know what to look for by now. They will generally numb the area with an anesthestic before inserting the needle. If you have the procedure done under fluoroscopy you generally aren't in a fetal position also. I hope this helps. The emg I had was pretty much a breeze, can't help you on the muscle biopsy as I haven't had one of those. Take care and I hope that it goes as well as possible for you. See if there is any way at all you can have it done under fluoroscopy as that is the way to go. Your friend in Texas, Jeanna

I had several lumbal punctions in the last couple of years. Before

they gave me the lumbo peritoneal shunt.

Drink as much as possible but not just water. Drink things with

caffein such as coca cola and coffee.

And lay down ( flat !!! ) as long as possible. I did that always

for 24 hours. Normaly you can stay after 6 hours but my experience

is that you have less headaches from the low pressure when you take

your time. Take the slow train !!!

Good luck and take care on monday,

Kim, Yes I fell but I'm getting better. You certainly had a much worse week of it than I did. I don't have many medical answers for you cuz my brain is too foggy right now. But I certainly understand the frustration and anger. You get to feeling like you just want a vacation from this job of being sick...just a break...but every morning you wake up and it's right in your face again. I think alot of others will tell you that you just have to keep on the doctor's ass cuz they just don't get it. And you just keep on it until they do...if even just in part. Sometimes you wonder just what has to happen before they really DO something. Keep on takin it easy for awhile, Kim, and don't rush into doing too much too soon. Listen to your body when it needs to rest. I think my falling was half wearing newer bifocals and half knowing that the feeling in my legs isn't always what it should be. My

prayers are with you(and everybody else) for some answers soon. love and hugs S.casmar38@... wrote:

Dear Aishia,

There is a lession or "inflammation" in the occipital lobe more on the left side on both sides. I have to repeat the the MRI March 15th to see if the lession changes i think that is how they will determine if its active i think my symptoms are prove enough but they said that because the treatment is so radical (although im re thinking the pred thing) anyway Ill see what they say and take it from there im just nervous about little pains i get and these sensations are just weird but thnaks you for all the info i will keep you posted......................
